Position Location: CSMS-North, Atlanta, Georgia. 

Permanent Change of Station (PCS): PCS is not authorized.

Selected Reserve Incentive Program (SRIP): Acceptance of a Federal Excepted technician position of over 179 days in length will cause termination from the Selected Reserve Incentive Program (SRIP).

Type of Appointment: This is a full-time, Excepted Indefinite, dual-status position which requires Georgia Army National Guard Membership.

Job Summary: This position is located in the Joint Forces Headquarters—State, Logistics Directorate (J-4), Surface Maintenance Facility.  The primary purpose of this position is to perform machining operations that involve the manufacture of complex and non-routine parts and items from raw stock of differing metals, metal alloys, and other materials in support of maintenance activities.  Work products are typically one-of-a-kind and involve unusual trade problems that require a high degree of ingenuity and responsibility.

Background Check:  Selectee may, at the option of the agency, be required to submit to criminal, credit history, and general background checks which will be evaluated by the agency prior to a final offer of employment and access into the Georgia National Guard Federal Technician or Active Guard/Reserve program.

National Guard Membership: This position requires military membership. It is designated for Georgia Army National Guard Enlisted incumbent(s) only. In accordance with ARNG regulations, incumbent performs duties necessary to accomplish military Machinist functions in support of programs essential to state Army National Guard daily operations, training and readiness missions.

As a member of a Georgia Army National Guard unit, you will be required to train with your unit, normally one weekend a month and 15 days of annual training each year. Georgia Army National Guard units and members are subject to immediate call to federal or state active duty to meet national or state emergencies.

The following list of duties is not conclusive but provides a brief snapshot of the duties that may be required of this position:

  • Fabricates complex and non-routine items that require numerous intricate steps, precise measurements, unusual and compound angles, or nonstandard applications of standard equipment. 
  • Performs machining work to manufacture castings, forgings, weldments, and other fabrications.  
  • Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, or specifications.   
  • Performs machine setups using advanced shop mathematics, and geometric and trigonometric formulas, to compute compound angles, angular indexing, hole patterns, pitch lead, and pitch diameters for various standard and non-standard threads. 
  • Sets up and operates most types of conventional and/or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools such as lathes; vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plane, or universal milling machines; shapers and planers; internal and external grinders, thread grinders; and radial drills. 
  • Performs precision handwork to finish, fit, and assemble machined parts. 
  • Uses various bench-mounted and hand-held powered and non-powered tools such as files, drills, reamers, and buffers. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

General Experience:   Must have experience or training that has provided the candidate with a basic knowledge of machining processes.  Must have the ability to use drill presses, shapers, planers and other types of associated machine tools.

Specialized Experience: Must have 18 months specialized experience performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments.  Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined.  Skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):  Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be further evaluated by the Selecting Official based on the following KSAs considered essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.

  • Knowledge of machining operations to set up and operate conventional and/or Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools.  Knowledge of the trade to plan sequences of operations that involve innovations in setups, attachments, techniques, and tooling is required. 
  • Knowledge of all aspects of machining operations as well as extensive knowledge of related trades in order to resolve problems concerning complex machining operations or procedures and to suggest more efficient or economic machining processes where necessary.
  • Skill and ingenuity in using machine tools and their attachments to perform machining processes requiring special adaptations of equipment or processes for which they were not specifically designed. 
  • Skill in performing work assignments that require accomplishing untried tasks or procedures such as those required in machining rare metals, new metal alloys, or other new materials.
  • Knowledge of the effect and relationship of heat-treating, welding, soldering and other related work processes on various machining operations to complete assignment.
  • Knowledge of advanced shop mathematics, with skill in using geometric and trigonometric formulas to compute compound angles, angular indexing, hole patterns, pitch lead, and pitch diameters for various standard and non-standard threads.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of manual welding processes involving oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen, and other industrial gases, as well as applying knowledge of various manual arc-welding processes.

Other Requirements: Candidates must have a valid state driver’s license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.
Candidates must possess a security clearance (Secret or Top Secret) or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment.

National Guard Compatibility: Once an applicant is selected and prior to being placed in the technician Machinist position, the selectee must be assigned to any unit in the Georgia Army National Guard as a Warrant Officer or  Enlisted member in WOBR:91; CMF: 91; MOS: 15F/J/X/Y, 25C/D/F/L/P/Q/R/S, 35T, 91F/G/K or 92A. Rank inversion is strictly prohibited.

Wear of the Army uniform as prescribed by AR/NGB/GA NGR is required for incumbent of this position.  Acceptance of this position constitutes concurrence with this requirement as a condition of employment.

Preplacement Medical Requirements: Selectee will be required to undergo medical testing, at the government's expense, prior to beginning employment.  Medical tests are used to determine fitness and eligibility for employment.

Optional Form 78 (Certificate of Medical Examination) will be used to determine the fitness and eligibility for employment.  Upon review of results, the Human Resources Officer will approve selection, require additional medical information or find selectee medically disqualified for employment and withdraw said offer.
