The Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) is seeking a motivated and highly-qualified candidate for an exciting full-time permanent position located in Germantown, MD. The incumbent to this position serves as the Senior Technical Advisor for the Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) and, acts as the principal point of contact for the EFRC portfolio as a whole. If selected for this position, you will:

  • Serve as a recognized scientific authority and expert in one or more of the following and has general knowledge of all of the following disciplines: condensed matter and materials physics, materials chemistry, chemical sciences, geosciences, and energy biosciences.
  • Be responsible for the planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating the research program as a whole on a national and international level.
  • Serve as an expert and consultant to other scientist and senior management. Organize, participate in, and/or lead committees composed of agency, interagency, and government personnel for the purpose of representing the organization and DOE programmatic interests.
  • Prepare, justify, and support the portions of the budget relating to the Energy Frontier Research Centers.
  • Develop and prepare analytical documents to communicate with top management of DOE and echelons of government on the status of projects, programmatic phases, and new developments and opportunities in the broad range research associated with the program.
  • Lead the program management team that directs the management of the Energy Frontier Research Centers, including participation in teleconferences, providing management guidance, and tracking technical progress.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:   All qualified candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.  Specialized experience for this position is defined as education and experience in fields of physical science which has equipped the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position.  (PROVIDING SUCH EVIDENCE WHEN APPLYING IS YOUR Responsibility). 3. Ability to plan, budget, justify, and allocate funds among a variety of competing programs and requirements.

4. Ability to effectively communicate in writing to prepare analytical documents and/or research findings.

5. Ability to effectively communicate orally to serve as a spokesperson for the organization in the broad scientific areas of responsibility. 

You must possess:


A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.




B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
