JOB SUMMARY:

Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

Incumbent is a Research Physiologist/Research Animal Scientist assigned to the Cropping Systems Research Laboratory, Livestock Issues Research Unit in Lubbock, Texas. Researchers within this unit determine the effect of livestock related stress on animal health and well-being by studying physiological, immunological and behavioral responses.  Connections between livestock stress, immune function and human preharvest food safety are studied so that management practices and alternative production systems can be developed to reduce animal pathogens prior to processing.

Major Duties:

Incumbent performs the following duties:

  • Evaluates the complex interactions associated with health and productivity in cattle and pigs resulting from various stressors including, but not limited to, transportation stress, immunological stress, weaning stress, nutritional stress and handling stress;
  • Develops a better understanding of how non-antibiotic nutritional supplements can be utilized in livestock production to improve the health status and overall well-being of beef cattle and swine;
  • Develops hypotheses, formulates appropriate experimental designs, and executes appropriate methodology to complete research projects;
  • Conducts final data analyses and interpretation of data; and
  • Designs, conducts, and publishes research in peer-reviewed, scientific journals.

Basic Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible: 

 

GS-0413: Degree; in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

 

GS-0487: (A) Degree: animal science, dairy science, poultry; or a related discipline or field of animal science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and agricultural sciences, and 20 semester hours in animal science. For animal scientist positions, at least 10 of the required 20 semester hours in animal science must have been in courses dealing with the breeding, feeding, production, and management of livestock, and the care and preparation of their products OR (B) Combination of education and experience- courses equivalent to a major in the basic biological and agricultural sciences, including a minimum of 20 semester hours in appropriate animal science subjects, as described in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 

 

Additional Requirements: In addition to the requirements listed above, applicants also must posses the following:

 

GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service OR masters or equivalent degree directly related to the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.  The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

1. Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of animal physiology or animal science as it relates to livestock and livestock production practices.

2. Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of immunology as it relates to cattle and swine.

3. Skill in conducting livestock research in a laboratory or production environment.

 

4. Ability to design, plan and conduct research and publish research results in peer-reviewed, scientific journals.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected.  A peer review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee.

R
esearch scientists have open-ended promotion potential.  Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically.  The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology.  *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.
