The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Nurse Practitioner to serve in the Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP). An ideal candidate for the position will have experience in providing nursing consultation for clinical problem solving and research facilitation; have excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills; and have the ability to interpret clinical data as they relate to the diagnosis and treatment of fear and anxiety disorders.

The DIRP conducts research ranging from studies into mechanisms of normal brain function, conducted at the behavioral, systems, cellular, and molecular levels, to clinical investigations into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness. As a Nurse Practitioner, you will coordinate and facilitate the implementation of psychopharmacological studies and brain imaging protocols. Some of your major duties and responsibilities will be to:

  • Interview subjects to obtain social, medical, and psychiatric history, medication history of and use of alcohol and illicit drugs.
  • Provide clinical support to patients throughout the time of participation in research protocols.
  • Perform physical examinations, place medical orders, and review lab results for normal and abnormal findings.
  • Conduct preliminary evaluation of potential participants through telephone interviews. Review medical records; consult with treating professionals and consultation with medical staff, leading to acceptance for onsite evaluation or rejection with referral if indicated.
  • Provide assistance during the psychopharmacological and brain imaging studies, including inserting and drawing blood from a venous catheter; administering drugs; debriefing after procedures; and providing comfort and reassurance to subjects.
  • Document research and clinical findings. Present data at clinical staff meetings.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.   An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment.   No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained.

In addition to the basic requirements above, you must possess the following:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least 1 year of Nurse Practitioner experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing leadership in comprehensive nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members; coordinating and managing patient populations within clinical research environments; coordinating, implementing (e.g., collecting research data/samples) or managing multiple clinical protocols within a research program; securing health and developmental histories; recording findings and making critical evaluations; performing or requesting special screening and developmental tests and laboratory tests and interpreting the results; discriminating between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional or mental problems; making decisions concerning medical care needs of patients with physicians as well as decisions regarding nursing care needs; identifying and managing specific illnesses; giving direct specialized nursing care; delegating tasks to allied nursing personnel.
