Western Area Power Administration - Serving the West with Federal Hydropower. We offer career opportunities in a fast-paced, dynamic electric utility industry. We market federally produced hydropower from more than 50 powerplants across the central and western United States and operate and maintain over 17,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines. The Western Area Power Administration is one of four power marketing administrations within the Department of Energy .

At the full performance level, this position supports the Regional Manager and administrative program managers in carrying out the mission of the office.  This position works closely with the Regional Manager to oversee, coordinate, and manage a broad range of administrative, budgetary, and procurement activities including preparing time and attendance records, processing travel requests and vouchers, and making small purchases with a credit card.  This position has lead responsibility for a team of Federal and contract administrative assistants including coordination of administrative coverage throughout the Regional Manager’s office; development of non-lead administrative assistants; and evaluation of administrative resource needs in the Region.  This position controls and manages the Regional Manager’s appointments; monitors schedules of planned official functions and coordinates arrangements; schedules conferences and meetings and coordinates arrangements, including travel, space, equipment, agenda, and attendees.  This position serves as the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) for an Administrative Services contract, performing a wide variety of COR administrative duties; such as, assisting the contract bidding process; reviewing and approving invoices from the contractor; resolving discrepancies; approving monetary awards, overtime, training, and travel for the contract employees; and calculating budget items for current and projected fiscal years.

GS-08:  Specialized experience includes providing a wide variety of secretarial and/or administrative support to a single function manager and associated group of employees to include such things as preparing time and attendance records; processing travel requests and vouchers; making small purchases with a credit card; setting up meetings and preparing agendas and notes; maintaining supervisor’s calendar; receiving calls and visitors and referring them to the proper party, etc.


To qualify for the GS-9 level you must have 1 year specialized experience at the next lower lever and meet the specialized experience


GS-09:  Specialized experience includes the typical secretarial support as outlined above, but in a larger group setting, e.g., providing a wide variety of administrative support to a manager, subordinate groups of managers supervisors, and a large group (over 100) of employees.  Experience must also include serving as point of contact for significant employee and organizational events. 


This position may require overnight travel of 1-2 days per month.

This position requires a valid state drivers license.

If selection is made at a lower grade, promotion up to the full performance level may be made without further competition. However, promotion(s) will depend on the performance of the incumbent and are not guaranteed.

If selected, you may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

If selected for this position, your appointment is contingent upon completion of OF-306, Declaration for Federal Employment, during the pre-employment process.

If selected, you will be required to complete a questionnaire and are subject to a criminal background check to determine suitability for Federal employment before appointment.
