These positions will serve as an Aerospace Engineer performing research in the areas of aviation operations, flight deck systems, modeling of air traffic systems, and crew interactions for all aircraft classes in support of programs/projects.

This is a Term appointment not to exceed 4 years. May be extended an additional 2 years.

Serves as a Aerospace Engineer performing research in the areas of aviation operations, flight deck systems, modeling of air traffic systems, and crew interactions for all aircraft classes in support of programs/projects. There is a need to apply an interdisciplinary set of skills that includes traditional engineering, formal experimental methods and human-system interaction. The fundamental goal is to produce quality research products that meet the high technical standards and business needs of the user/customer, while meeting cost and schedule constraints. This work involves participation in a multidisciplinary research team to develop, implement, and integrate advanced flight deck technologies and new concepts of air traffic management (ATM) to address the capacity and safety needs of the national airspace system. Knowledge of research methods, simulation, and data analysis is required. Specialized knowledge of air traffic operations or areas critical to NextGen is strongly desired for this position. These areas include but are not limited to concepts/technologies such as: self separation; interval management; atmospheric hazards to aviation, and unmanned aircraft systems, as well as function allocation between ground and airborne systems and function allocation between humans and automation.

Conducts scientific investigations of limited scope, with readily definable objectives. Participates responsibly with in all phases of the complete research process including problem definition, the collection and reporting of data, planning, execution, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research findings under close supervision from management and general guidance of senior researchers. Projects result in a publishable addition to scientific knowledge or to the development of a new or recognizably improved method or technique. Serves on team projects, provides technical assistance as requested and with in guidelines to other scientists/engineers to facilitate experimentation and educational programs.

May co-author or play a secondary role in producing one or more papers or reports of considerable interest within a scientific field. Attends technical and professional workshops, scientific meetings, and symposia for the purpose of maintaining a current awareness of the developments and advances in the individual's research field.

As an Aerospace Engineer/research trainee, increases knowledge, skills, and abilities in the profession. As part of planned career development, works with and assists senior members of the staff in the performance of analytical/scientific/engineering assignments. Receives advanced training through various means to provide a more thorough understanding of and exposure to domain expertise and the various methods employed in design, evaluation, research, or other analytical/scientific/engineering functions within the branch. Independently carries out the more common professional assignments in which he/she has received specific or related training. Typically, assignments are restricted to situations where more simple and standardized practices and processes are used, and where the environment is known to be cooperative. Functions in an assistant capacity, typically working with senior staff members, carrying out predetermined phases of the assignments designed to provide broad exposure to the work in the profession. Increases networks and contacts beneficial to the successful performance of assignments. Conducts regular interactions with colleagues and supervisors in order to complete work assignments. Contacts extend beyond the immediate work area. Interprets and applies pertinent regulations and style manuals governing written communications in order to prepare written materials which communicate the intended information. Researches and analyzes data, issues, and information that support project recommendations or the work assignments of higher-grade specialists. Prepares well-researched and logically organized presentations related to work assignments. Presents facts, issues, and positions that convey the intended information with the appropriate diplomacy and emphasis. Trainee, with the assistance of the mentor, will progress selected research project toward completion and presentation for an internal panel.

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience at the GS-9 level includes: demonstrated experience with research methods and procedures; aerospace or related engineering principles and data reduction and/or analysis techniques.

Specialized experience at the GS-7 level includes: demonstrated experience with research methods and procedures; aerospace or related engineering principles.

Applicants applying at the GS-7 level must meet one of the following requirements in addition to the Basic Education Requirement:
a. One year of appropriate professional experience at least equivalent to the GS-5 grade level; or
b. One full academic year of graduate level education in an appropriate field, or any equivalent combination of experience and graduate study; or
c. Completion of all requirements for a bachelor's degree which meets one of the following SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS STANDARDS:
1. Standing in the upper third of college class or major subdivision at time of application; or
2. Grade point average of 2.9 of a possible of 4.0 or its equivalent for all courses completed at time of application or during last two years of undergraduate curriculum; or
3. Grade point average of 3.5 of a possible 4.0 or equivalent for all courses completed in a qualifying major field of study at time of application or during last two years of undergraduate curriculum; or
4. Election to membership in a national honorary society (other than freshman society) that meets the requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies.
d. Twelve months of student trainee experience that includes at least one work period equivalent to GS-5 or at least 15 months of appropriate student trainee experience which includes one work period equivalent to the GS-4; or
e. Successful completion of a five year program of study of at least 160 semester hours; or
f. A professional engineering degree and up to 12 months experience as a technician or technologist equivalent to at least the GS-5 level; or
g. Successful completion of all requirements for two bachelor's degrees, one in an approprate field of science or engineering; or
h. Six months aggregate of specialized experience or training, including three months gained after the junior year in a sub-professional, semiprofessional or technician status; or
i. Honors or elective positions indicating leadership other than scholastic, provide that academic standing was in upper half of graduating class; or
j. Patterns of courses which have unusual preparatory value or direct relatedness to the advertised position.

a. One year of professional experience in an appropriate field at least equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to GS-7 in the Federal service within or closely related to the specialty for which application was made; or

d. An equivalent combination of experience and graduate study.


Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering. Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mathematics (Pure or Applied) (or other related field), if it includes or is supplemented by nine semester hours (or the equivalent) in machine design, mechanics, hydraulics, dynamics, thermodynamics, mechanical design or mechanical measurement.
