The DSS Student Summer Internship Program gives promising students the opportunity to gain marketable experience in the field of industrial security.  Summer interns are full-time employees on a temporary appointment (for the period of June-September 2013).  These opportunities are highly competitive; applicants must be US citizens, have a strong academic record (cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale), complete a 500 word essay, and possess outstanding communication skills.


DSS Mission:


On behalf of the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government Departments and Agencies, the Defense Security Service supports national security and the warfighter through our security oversight and education missions.  DSS oversees the protection of U.S. and foreign classified information and technologies in the hands of industry under the National Industrial Security Program (NISP) and serves as the functional manager for the DoD security professional development program.  We provide security education, training, and professional development services as the functional manager for the DoD security professional development program, and for other U.S. Government personnel and contractor employees, and representatives of foreign governments, as required.

We offer our interns interesting, challenging work in core operational elements in the following offices that support the DSS mission and vision: 


·         Counterintelligence  Directorate (CI)

·         Industrial Security Field Operations (ISFO)

CI:  The CI directorate provides direct support to the NISP, the Center for the Development of Security Excellence, and the Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives program.  As a CI professional, you will make a significant contribution in keeping sensitive and classified information and technologies out of the hands of our nation’s adversaries. Position available at Andover, MA only.


ISFO:   ISFO consists of Industrial Security Representatives (ISR) and Information Security System Professionals (ISSP).  ISRs, the primary interface between the U.S. Government and industry, interact with their industry counterparts on a daily basis.  They provide oversight, advice, and assistance, and ultimately determine the ability of those companies to protect classified information.  ISSPs remain current with the latest technological developments in information security, and play a major role in identifying potential threats and intrusions that our adversaries pose on information technology systems.  Positions available at all locations listed on this announcement.

To qualify for these positions you must meet the academic criteria specified below.  In addition, an ideal candidate would possess basic skill in using office automation programs such as Microsoft Office, Excel, Power Point, or other desktop software programs.  Additionally, the ability to organize work and communicate effectively in a professional environment is highly desirable traits.  To qualify at the GG-03 pay level: You must have completed 1 academic year of post-high school study; which is equivalent to 30 semester hours of college credit.  To qualify at the GG-04 pay level: You must have completed 2 academic years of post-high school study, which is equivalent to 60 semester hours of college credit, OR associates degree.  To qualify at the GG-05 pay level: You must  have completed a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.  If you are a Graduate student, your pay level will be based on your undergraduate GPA or the graduate level program you are pursuing.  Qualifications are based on your academic standing as of the end of the 2012/2013 academic year. 

You must be a degree seeking student enrolled at least half-time in an accredited educational institution. Half-time enrollment is defined by the educational institution. For institutions that do not have a definition of half-time, half of full-time enrollment will be considered half-time.  Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale is required.

We accept unofficial transcripts, as long as they contain the applicant's name, the name of the school, and the list of classes and credits earned. Transcripts must be received in this office by 11:59PM EST on the closing date in order to be considered.



Applicants must submit a 500 word essay describing why you are interested in an internship at DSS and how this internship will help you grow as an individual. 


Your transcript will be reviewed to verify the number of semester hours corresponds to the grade level applied for and the cumulative GPA is 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.

Because this is a temporary appointment, interns do not receive employee benefits such as health and life insurance.  You will earn sick leave and be paid for Federal holidays that fall within your regularly scheduled tour of duty. Individuals selected for an internship are responsible for securing their own travel and lodging arrangements, to include any and all expenses incurred prior to and during employment.  We will provide housing resource information upon request.
