This position is located in the Naval War College, in the Office of the Dean of International Programs.  The goal of the International Program is to ensure that international students return to their homelands with an understanding of the responsibility of governments, military, and citizens to protect, preserve, and respect the rights of every individual.  The International Military Student Support Coordinator is the primary contact responsible for the care and welfare of the 150 international officers and their families while the officer is taking courses at the U.S Naval War College during each academic year.

DUTIES:  The duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:

 

    • Work closely with OPNAV, Naval Education and Training Security Assistance Field Activity, and State Department personnel to enable coordination, vetting, assignment and funding of international officers students
    • Plan and execute effective orientation which smoothly integrates students and prepares them for studies. Ensure applicable directives are followed by supporting staff to facilitate personal needs of students, including pay, travel, and dependent support requirements
    • Communicate with local healthcare administrators to identify and resolve problems such as the payment of medical bills
    • Supervise development and execution of arrival/departure plans at the start/end of the academic year for the international military student and his/her family by coordinating travel arrangements
    • Resolve problems encountered as a result of lack of understanding of cultures or language or procedural deficiency
    • Advise students and their families on a wide array of personal, medical, financial, protocol, and cultural matters
    • Manage the International Student sponsor program for students and their families by recruiting volunteer military and civilian sponsors within and outside the Naval War College

Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate duties such as the following:

Providing information and guidance to international student sponsors relative to religious, cultural, and social customs of the different countries; communicating the details of course, dates, and travel arrangements with international students and their local points of contact; meeting incoming international students and their families at the airport to ensure safe transportation to the Naval Station Newport; and applying knowledge of the Naval War College’s academic programs, personnel policies and procedures to ensure a positive educational experience for international military students and their families.

 

You may also qualify if you possess a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D if related, or a combination of education and experience.

REQUIREMENTS:

Generally, current Federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level.
