JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:

Serves as an Analytical Chemist, GS-1320-12, with Aberdeen Test Center, Warfighter Directorate, Applied Sciences Test Division, Chemical Sampling and Analysis Team, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD 21005.

 

Aberdeen Test Center (ATC) is located on more than 56,707 acres of land and water at the Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), in Harford County, MD. As a Department of Defense major range and test facility, ATC tests a wide range of military weapons systems, equipment, and material. ATC's goal is to assure that our nation's armed forces are provided with weapons and equipment which perform properly, safely, and reliably in the field. ATC has a very diverse workforce comprised of military, civilian and contractor personnel in the engineering, scientific, analytical, and technical and administration fields. The immediate area offers housing, public, private and parochial school systems, and major colleges. The incumbent will serves as a senior level Analytical Chemist responsible for the development and implementation of routine and non-routine analytical chemistry methods using common analytical instrumentation. Techniques include but are not limited to gas and liquid chromatography, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry, wet chemical analyses. Analytical methods may be based on existing ASTM, EPA or NIOSH methods or may be in-house methods.  The incumbent is also responsible for training and developing lower graded employees.

Specialized experience: To Qualify applicants must possess one year specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level equivalent to GS-11.  Specialized experience is defined as: (1) Develop new processes to analyze complex samples. (2) Perform liquid chromatography to separate a mixture of compounds and identify individual components. (3) Perform wet chemical analyses to determine a material’s properties.

 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities)in the following areas:

   1)    KNOWLEDGE OF SPECTROSCOPY ANALYSIS.

   2)    KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMICAL ANALYSES (i.e. Chromatographic Analysis).

   3)    KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMICAL ANALYSIS INSTRUMENTATION.

   4)    SKILL IN WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

   5)    ABILITY TO RESEARCH


A: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B: Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Conditions of Employment:

* Agree to submit Finacial Disclosure Statement, OGE-450, annually for the duration of your federal appointment.

* Complete the Acquisition Career Fieild Test and Evaluation within 24 months of entrance on duty, and also sign an Acquisition Corp written tenure agreement to remain in the federal service in the position for at least 3 years.

* Obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

* Drug screening is Required.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
