Selectee has full supervisory responsibility for control of Food Service Operations and preparation of food in the Canteen Service and under the general and specific instructions of the Canteen Officer in charge of the Manual Food Operation. Selectee is accountable for the quantity and quality of work done. Selectee is responsible to assure efficient and economical work operations within the guidelines provided by the Canteen Officer and the policies and procedures of the Veterans Canteen Service. Selectee is responsible as instructed for the supervision of the following: cooks grill cooks, salad makers, dishwashers, receiving person, food service workers, and cashiers. Selectee is responsible for the overall operations of the Food Court, and assigning duties to all food service employees to assure the serving of meals are timely, correctly portioned, seasoned properly, and displayed attractively. Selectee controls, accounts for, and secures all cash stored in the canteen safe as well as all safe transactions involving petty cash, change funds, withdrawal funds, etc. Regularly verifies cash funds. Accounts for and verifies all withdrawals. Selectee reassigns work or adjusts daily work schedule to meet emergency situations or changing workloads to motivate subordinates to achieve effective manpower utilization within the Canteen Service and to contribute to the overall Canteen Service Cafeteria operational standards. Selectee maintains constant surveillance of work areas, operating procedures, work methods, employee performance, sanitation, condition of equipment, compliance to policies and procedures established by the Canteen Service.

Selectee assigns duties and responsibilities on a daily basis to all employees that may need to be explained to the employee, and gives detailed instructions to that employee as to procedure and checks to ensure quality and quantity of items are sufficient for the days sales. Selectee is always available to train or assist with any food preparation, sanitation, or portioning of all and any items to be prepared. Selectee works with other employees and sets the pace. Selectee demonstrates proper work methods and ensures other employees are adhering to these methods, including proper food handling procedures, sanitation procedures, and portion control.Work Schedule: Subject to irregular tours of duty

Your background must demonstrate experience in food service and supervising food service workers.


Physical Requirements- selectee is subject to a passing a pre-employment physical, physical requirements are as follows:

Heavy lifting &, heavy carrying 45lb or over, straight pulling (50 hours), pushing (4 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required (prolonged), moderate kneeling, repeated bending, climbing, legs only, both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13” to 16” to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid permitted), other-emotional stability. 

WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental factors: outside, and inside, excessive heat, excessive cold, excessive humidity, excessive dampness or chilling, excessive noise, intermittent, fumes, smoke or gases, solvents (degreasing agents), grease and oils, electrical energy, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles, working on ladders, working with hands in water, working closely with others, working alone,  protracted or irregular hours of work and arduous duty.


EXPERIENCE:  A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.   Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( ). 

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:  Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.  Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.  The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions.  The screen-out element for this position is Ability to Lead or Supervise Food Service Workers .

JOB ELEMENTS:  Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:


1.    Work Practices (Knowledge of Food Service Work)

2.    Knowledge of Materials (Knowledge of the use and care of Kitchen Utensil and Equipment.
