English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
To Qualify for this Position at the GS-5 Level: Must have at least one year of specialized experience at or above the GS-4 grade level in Federal service or the equivalent in the private sector. This experience must have provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Examples of qualifying experience: work on a police force; service as a military police officer; work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; criminal investigative duties; or other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. **NOTE: Successful completion of a Federal, State, county or municipal police academy or comparable training course that included at least 40 classroom hours of instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations, may be substituted for a maximum of 3 months of specialized experience, at the GS-5 level only. Documentation to support this training is required. -OR- Completion of a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work of the position. You must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. -OR- Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. You must submit a copy of your transcripts with your application.
To Qualify for this Position at the GS-6 Level: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in Federal service which equipped them with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the Police Officer. Specialized experience is experience that has been performed independently, under general supervision, and included regularly pursuing and/or apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest; actually subduing individuals causing disturbances; arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts; performing control desk duties; taking charge of a crime or accident scene and conducting long- and short-range investigations; providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; performing criminal investigations and similar work.
Note: You must provide detailed information of your experience performed. Information such as "I was a Patrolman", "I was a Police Officer for a number of years," or "I enforced Federal, State, and County laws" is insufficient to determine your qualifications. Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
Additional Requirements for Police Officer Position:
- Applicants must possess a current, valid State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.
- VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification.
- New VA Police Officers are required to attend a 8-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty.
- A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
- A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
- Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Applicants and employees must possess emotional and mental stability. A psychological examination is required. In most instances, a specific medical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant or employee. Rating Factors: Applicants will be rated as part of the Assessment Questionnaire for this position on documented experience and/or education and training relating to the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAO's):
- Knowledge of a body of standardized rules, methods, procedures, and operating techniques in preventing or resolving offenses and in conducting preliminary investigations of incidents.
- Knowledge of a body of basic or commonly used laws, rules, regulations, and procedures as they relate to law enforcement.
- Knowledge of basic investigative methods and techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from various backgrounds.
Physical Requirements: The person in this position must be capable of arduous physical exertion. This includes the ability to carry persons during emergency evacuation, to run to the assistance of crime victims, to intercede in physical disturbances, and use his/her physical ability, as necessary, to restrain violent persons. The officer works both inside and outside buildings. He/She must dress appropriately, wearing protective clothing as necessary, patrol the facility by walking in all types of weather and perform duties on a 24 hour shift-rotation basis. Some areas he/she checks are high-noise areas (boiler plant, incinerator room, utility rooms) and some areas require the officer to use precautions (xray, lab, and MRI scanning room) due to possible exposure to.

Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:
- Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
- Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
- Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
- Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group. Qualifying veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the best qualified group.
