The Western Area Power Administration is one of four power marketing administrations within the Department of Energy .

Electronic Equipment Craftsman Employee will maintain, modify, install, repair, program, and test a variety of simple to complex electronic equipment used in these categories: communication, control process computers, and supervisory control systems. Perform database modification. Employee must have the knowledge, skills, training, and experience to be proficient on all of these categories of equipment. Develop software test routines for verifying communication settings and operational specifications. Perform work on the communications equipment that is used for power system operation and control, relaying, data logging, and indication. The equipment includes both fixed and mobile analog and digital VHF, UHF, microwave radio and fiber optic communication systems, voice and data communications, telephony systems, digital cross-connect equipment, communication alarm equipment, powerline carrier and tone equipment, and multiplexers. Work on other electronic equipment such as surveillance equipment, antenna systems, chart and/or oscillograph recorders. Additional equipment includes auxiliary generators, transfer switches, storage batteries, battery chargers, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), HVAC and propane fuel systems. Perform work on control process computers and peripheral equipment. Install and test network devices and connections in LAN, WAN and control center networks. Install, align, test, troubleshoot, perform scheduled maintenance on the following equipment: SCADA master equipment, PBX (private branch exchange), digital and analog processors, data monitoring equipment, communication alarming equipment, large scale integration video equipment, voice and data logging equipment, data storage systems, UPS and non-UPS power equipment, CCTV equipment, paging and notification systems, employee life safety systems, intertie monitoring equipment, and other systems as assigned which directly support local Control Center functions. Employees may be required to function in an "on-call" status for 24-7 support. Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in supervisory control and data acquisition equipment and analog, digital telemetering equipment. With interface computer, perform download and upload of database configurations, identify software errors, make correction to software databases and ensure the latest revised database is in use. Coordinate the installation of new SCADA databases. Complete testing and certification acceptance with dispatch operations in accordance with accepted test plan and procedures. Maintain and service customer utility interfaces and remote terminal unit (RTU) data ports and ensure proper communication ports are maintained for optimal performance. Program, test, install, and maintain RTUs at power control substations. Work from and interpret electrical drawings and electronic circuit diagrams. Install, align, calibrate, adjust and maintain equipment without endangering system operation. Perform tower work including tower inspection, hanging coax, changing tower lamps, installing various antenna and associated hardware, and tightening or loosening hardware. Use digital signal analyzers. Install, maintain, and repair SONET equipment. Install, commission, maintain and repair data switches.

You must have journeyman-level ability in the duties of an Electronic Equipment Craftsman. You must meet all the qualification and eligibility requirements for the position within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. You may review the qualification requirements here.

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience for this position.


If you are tentatively selected for this position, you will be required to have a physical examination that will determine whether you are qualified to perform the duties of the position. An offer of employment will depend upon your successfully passing the physical examination.

This position requires completion of an annual medical examination at Federal expense.

You must test negative for illegal drugs before placement in the position, and will be subject to random drug testing thereafter. If a determination of the use of illegal drugs is confirmed, non-selection or disciplinary action, up to and including removal from Federal service, may result.

This position may require overnight travel of 20 days per month

If selected for this position, you must live no more than 60 minutes away from the duty station in case of call-out.

This position is subject to overtime work.

You must have a valid driver's license.   

You will be required to possess a pair of fully-encased safety-toed footwear meeting the standard ASTM F 2413-05 upon reporting to work.

The employee is expected to be in an on-call status on a rotational basis.  While in an on-call status, the employee is required to carry an electronic paging device and will remain within one-half hour travel time of their primary place of residence and will sustain themselves in an able- to- respond- and- perform- work condition.

If selected, you may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

If selected for this position, your appointment is contingent upon completion of OF-306, Declaration for Federal Employment, during the pre-employment process.
