This position is located in the Laboratory of Systems Biology (LSB), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

If selected for this position at the GS-12 level, you will serve as a Biologist, providing assistance to one or more senior investigators by performing laboratory experiments in support of biomedical research programs and projects.  Specifically, you will perform the following duties:

  • Assume responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, and management of all experiments and experimental protocols;
  • Develop methods for and collect, analyze, organize and record experimental data in a form suitable for publication and future reference by others;
  • Carry out a variety of sophisticated methods for analyses of data, and apply standard statistical methods such as dispersion, analysis of variance, and regression and correlation analysis;
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory;
  • Assume responsibility for oversight of mouse breeding and cage allocation planning;
  • Aggregate, place and track orders for reagents and instruments;
  • Play a major role in the training and teaching of laboratory staff.

    Minimum Qualification Requirements:

    A.  Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

    OR

    B.  Combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

     

    For the GS-11 level

    In addition to the educational requirement, you must (1) demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks:  assisting in developing, planning, and implementing biomedical research; collecting, studying, developing, assembling, and analyzing research data; developing and preparing portions of reports, analytical interpretations, conclusions, or recommendations, typically for publication; using a variety of laboratory instruments to perform analyses; and modifying existing protocols and procedures to use in conducting studies; 

    OR

    Completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree; 

    OR

    Have a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

     

    For the GS-12 level:

    In addition to the basic requirement, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: independently conducting experiments using specialized laboratory equipment and processes; developing, planning, and implementing biomedical research; calibrating and operating various laboratory instruments; performing analyses and developing new protocols and procedures for use in studies; and analyzing and interpreting scientific data and preparing detailed summaries of laboratory findings, typically for publication.
