This position is located at the Naval History and Heritage Command, Pensacola, Florida, but reports to the Chief of Staff at the Naval History and Heritage Command Headquarters in Washington, DC. 

 

 The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) is the Navy’s center of excellence for Navy History and Heritage. In the execution of its role, the activities at NHHC span maintenance and monitoring of a range of historic artifacts with radiation elements as well as basic operational equipment such as an x-ray machine.  As the (RSO) activities will likewise support oversight of a wide range of facilities including artifacts at all NHHC museums and warehouses. As the Radiation Safety Officer, you will be responsible for all aspects of radiation safety, training, monitoring, dosimetry and oversight as described in the Duties section below.

Your duties may include but are not limited to:

 

·        Oversee the Command Radiation Safety Program (RASP). In that capacity you will be responsible for the safe use of radiation and radioactive materials, as well as regulatory compliance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), naval and federal regulations, the Navy Radiological Affairs Support Program Manual (RAD-010), and all conditions of the Naval Radioactive Material Permit issued to the Command.  

·        Provide advice, guidance, and assistance to all elements of the command on all matters pertaining to radiation safety requirements, procedures, and command policy. 

·        Develop and coordinate training and orientation programs for RASP radiation exposed individuals and other personnel as required by Navy and federal regulations under the direction of the RSO.

·        Determine the suitability of space, facilities and equipment for the use and/or storage of radioactive material and radiation producing machines.

·        Prepare standard operating and emergency procedures for the use of radioactive material, devices containing radioactive material, and machine sources of ionizing radiation. 

·        Identify radiation safety concerns, recommend or approve corrective action, initiate appropriate steps, and ensure compliance with all policies and regulations.

·        Be responsible for the receipt and shipment of all radioactive materials moving on or off station. 

·        Maintain a current inventory of all RASP sources and ensuring that sources are secured against loss, unauthorized use, or unauthorized disposal.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL GRADES:

 

The Office of Personnel Management has identified the following minimum educational requirements for this position:

 

A.   Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR

B.   Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

 

In addition to meeting the educational requirements above, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as follows:

 

GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector applying professional knowledge of health physics to evaluate or analyze the safe use of radiation. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying experience include:

 

·        determine safe location or facility requirements for radiation producing equipment.

·        Troubleshoot radiation safety programs to identify and resolve inconsistencies.

·        Interpret Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations for application to an organization.

 

GS-13: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector applying professional knowledge of health physics to plan or monitor programs in place for the protection of persons and their environments from unwarranted exposure to radiation. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying experience include:

 

·        Evaluate radiation producing equipment to determine facilities requirements.

·        Troubleshoot radiation safety programs to identify and resolve inconsistencies.

·        Interpret Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations for application to an organization.

REQUIREMENTS:
