NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.

This position is located in the Office of Director of Communications, National Endowment for the Humanities. The incumbent serves as assistant to the Director and is responsible for participating in the work of the office by applying a good working knowledge of the programs under the supervisor’s control, of the agency’s funding programs and services that are available to the public, and the agency’s executive, program, and technical staff.  The work involves participating in the daily activities and projects of the office.  This includes writing, researching, social media communications, responding to telephone, mail, and electronic network inquiries, arranging and assisting with meetings or events, and clerical assignments.  These services require discretion and judgment.

¿  Handles incoming calls from the Endowment’s outside lines and for the communications 


¿  Handles incoming mail, drafting letters and e-mails for the communications director;

¿  Manages invitation lists and rsvps for Endowment events, including the Jefferson

     Lecture and the National Humanities Medals; 

¿  Uploads materials to the NEH Drupal website that are prepared by public affairs specialists

      and division and program officers within the NEH; 

¿  Gathers materials for release to the press;

¿  Helps monitor flow of information onto the website, including information from Facebook and Twitter 

      feeds.  Alerts the communications director to all posts that are out of the ordinary or

      possibly problematic;

¿  Assists in the development of briefing materials for the Director of Communications in

      preparation for meetings, conferences, training sessions and administrative activities;

¿  Helps prepare presentations for events and conferences;

¿  Demonstrates experience in obtaining legal permission to use photos on the NEH website; and

¿  Has familiarity with Drupal and can demonstrate experience with uploading stories and pictures on this content management system. Understands how to use the Adobe Creative Suite in conjunction with the Drupal content management system.

At the GS-5 level:  Qualified candidates must have three (3) years of progressively responsible experience,  one (1) year which was equivalent to at least the GS-4 level which shows the ability to successfully perform the duties of the position, for example, performing complex office automation duties using word processing to edit and reformat lengthy correspondence and reports. Create and maintain spreadsheets and databases; and responding to inquiries by phone and/or in writing.


SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:  Successful completion of a full four-year course of study above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite can be substituted for specialized experience. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45-quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.


COMBINATIONS OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at the GS-5 grade level.

Typing Certification: You must be able to type at least 40 words per minute. You can self certify by submitting a statement that you can type this speed.


Selective Placement Factor (SPF):  A SPF is a specific qualification requirement that is in addition to the minimum qualification requirements stated above and are essential to successfully perform the duties of this job.  SPF experience must be documented in your resume.  Applications without SPF experience will not receive further consideration under this announcement.


The Selective Placement Factors for this position are as follows:


¿  Experience with posting stories, photos, and other materials on a website that uses a Drupal content management platform, and

¿  One year of experience using Congress Plus software.
