Explore your possibilities at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. In this exciting position you provide administrative information and assistance to the park's employees. Your duties include, but are not limited to:


*serve as a point of contact for all human resources inquiries as the park's liaison with the regional human resources office

*serve as payroll coordinator

*assist fee collection specialist with fee remittances and deposits

*handle bills of collection, accounts payable and purchasing of goods and services 

*serve as park's charge card agency/organization program coordinator (A/OPC)

*oversee park's travel program by reviewing and submitting required documents and responding to travel-related inquiries from employees

*provide guidance and assistance to park employees in the development of purchase requests for submission to Financial Business Management System (FBMS) requistioners.

*responsible for park's personal property management program by coordinating annual inventories, entering data into FBMS and tracking acquisitions, transfers and disposals.

*serve as tenant manager for park housing program utilizing an electronic quarters management system.

*provide information technology (IT) assistance to park employees - setting up computers, loading software and adding devices such as printers and scanners; troubleshoot basic IT problems; serve as liaison with regional IT staff to resolve more complex IT problems.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is mostly sedentary requiring long periods of sitting at a desk or computer.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is generally performed in an office setting. From time to time, you may visit outdoor areas, maintenance shops, housing units and other park sites. The physical demands of these visits generally entail walking and some lifting and carrying of light objects.


AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve ( is a treasure of visual, geological, and biological surprises. Nestled in southern Colorado, the tallest dunes in North America rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This spectacular wonderland also includes alpine lakes and tundra, six peaks over 13,000 feet in elevation, ancient spruce and pine forests, large stands of aspen and cottonwood, grasslands, and wetlands — all habitat for diverse wildlife and plant species.


The climate of the San Luis Valley is marked by moderate summers and cold winters, light precipitation and much sunshine. The average summer temperature is 65 ° F, and the average winter temperature is 14° F. Winter snow, which occurs mainly in frequent light falls, averages less than 40 inches per year. The closest city to Great Sand Dunes NP&P is Alamosa (population 9,000), which is 35 miles away. It offers a full range of stores, businesses, restaurants, hotels, physician services, and religious institutions, as well as the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center, a movie theater, an 18-hole golf course, and a family recreation center. Elementary and secondary schools are located in Alamosa, in addition to the nearby communities of Fort Garland, Mosca, and Monte Vista. Alamosa is home to Adams State University and Trinidad State Junior College. An airport in Alamosa provides regular commercial airline service to Pueblo and Denver.


Housing is available for purchase or rent in Alamosa, as well as in other smaller communities or subdivisions that are closer to the park (from 7 to 25 miles).


Temporary government housing will be available to the selectee for three months from entrance-on-duty date.

QUALIFICATIONS : To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.



One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service OR six months of graduate level education directly related to this position OR a combination of specialized experience and directly related graduate level education.


Specialized Experience: Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: operating computerized information systems; purchasing; property management; timekeeping; files maintenance; budget tracking; preparing variety of forms and reports. To be creditable, your experience must have involved performance of a combination of the above duties.


Education:  Successfully completed six months (9 semester hours or school equivalent) of graduate education that is directly related to the duties of this position. This education must have been obtained from an accredited educational institution.


Combination: A combination of graduate education directly related to this position AND specialized experience, as noted above, can qualify you for this position.




One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service OR one year of graduate level education directly related to this position OR a combination of specialized experience and directly related graduate level education.


Specialized Experience: Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: providing a wide variety of administrative support services to enable efficient operation of a business or program office; the independent operation of computerized information systems including operating and troubleshooting a variety of IT equipment (computers, scanners, printers, fax machines, copiers) and training staff in their use; tracking and reconciling fiscal data for programmed accounts versus actual expenditures; preparing and following up on purchase orders and contracts; administering payroll and time and attendance; preparing a variety of forms and other administrative paperwork; performing property management work; preparing travel arrangements through an automated system; coordinating a variety of personnel actions. To be creditable, your experience must have involved performance of a combination of the above duties.


Education:  Successfully completed one year (18 semester hours or school equivalent) of graduate education that is directly-related to the duties of this position. This education must have been obtained from an accredited educational institution.


Combination: A combination of graduate education directly related to this position AND specialized experience, as noted above, can qualify you for this position.


Selective Factor: This position also requires that you type 40 words per minute based on a five minute sample with three or fewer errors. This requirement is considered a selective factor because you must have this skill to be eligible for the position. 


 Time-in-Grade Requirements: Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. This requires applicants who have held a GS position at any time within the past 52 weeks to have served at least 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for this occupation.

1. You may be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.

2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.

3. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
