JOB SUMMARY:

 

The Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is one of the premier federal inspector general offices with a prestigious team of professionals. The OIG performs audits, evaluations, investigations and special reviews of the personnel and programs of the DOJ components. The Assistant Inspector General for Investigations is responsible for executive leadership, direction, planning and conducting investigations relating to alleged or suspected violations of criminal laws. The position operates within the provisions of the Inspector General Act of 1978 and the Inspector General Act Amendment of 1988. The incumbent exercises executive leadership, direction and supervision of over 100 criminal investigators in eight field and area offices nationwide.

The AIG is responsible for executive leadership of the division and is responsible for managing a diverse workforce, coordinating investigative matters with internal and external organizations, and identifying and integrating key issues affecting the organization including political, social, economic, technological and administrative factors impacting on the investigations program.

Directs the effective implementation of strategic planning for the division with responsibility for the management of human resources, information technology, budget, and equipment.

Provides professional investigative advice and assistance to OIG components and Departmental organizations. Identifies and integrates key issues affecting the organization including political, economic, social, technological and administrative factors impacting on the criminal investigative work of the OIG. Works with and through the Departmental policy making and implementation structure and procedures to shape, formulate and recommend substantial and significant investigative polices. Ensures that the policies, procedures and operations of OIG, as they relate to investigations, are effective, efficient, mutually supporting, and in conformance with recognized standards and Federal regulations.

Administers a program which reviews and approves all reports of investigation to ensure that investigative findings are properly reported to the Inspector General, appropriate recommendations are made to Department agency heads, and recommendations are followed to completion.

Assigns resources to conduct case work either from headquarters or field offices. Approves overall operations and case work of field offices to provide investigative continuity of the organization and to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, practices, priorities, objectives and goals.

Formulates and recommends OIG positions on relevant proposed or new legislation. Prepares responses on legislative matters and serves as the agency expert on criminal investigative issues and procedures.

Works with and through DOJ policy making and implementation structures and procedures to shape, formulate and recommend substantial and significant evaluation and investigative issues.

Interacts with the Inspector General, other components of the DOJ, the legislative committee of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency, and other federal OIG’s.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

You will be evaluated based on the quality and extent of your total accomplishments, experience, education and training. Applicants currently serving under a career Senior Executive Service (SES) appointment, eligible for reinstatement into SES, or have successfully completed a SES Candidate Development Program (CDP) approved by OPM are not required to address the ECQs but must address all mandatory MTQs.

MANDATORY TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to the mandatory ECQs qualified candidates must possess the following technical qualifications.  Possession of these technical qualifications must be clearly documented in your application and should be addressed in a separate narrative statement not-to-exceed one page for each MTQ.

 

1. Substantial demonstrated experience managing, developing, directing, and carrying out broad criminal investigations and investigative matters (internally and externally) relating to alleged or suspected violations of criminal laws focused on corruption, fraud, waste and abuse. Experience as a Criminal Investigator or an equivalent position with experience with complex financial and white collar crime investigations.

 

You will be further evaluated on the following Executive Core Qualifications:

OTHER INFORMATION:

An initial SES career appointee is subject to a one-year SES probationary period.

All newly appointed Career SES leaders must sign the Reassignment Rights and Obligations Agreement as a condition of appointment in the SES.

Before entering on duty you will be required to complete a Financial Disclosure Report, SF-278.  You will need to provide the information annually.

Veterans preference is not applicable to the SES.


Successful completion of a background investigation is required for non-Department of Justice applicants.

Relocation expenses are authorized in accordance with applicable regulations.

If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. See www.sss.gov.
