The Physical Therapist provides professional, independent physical therapy services in an assigned area. The employee provides patient care/support services to an adult population of patients which is characterized by a very significant number of older, male patients. The therapist receives and interprets patient referrals/consults from a credentialed provider as outlined in the Physical Therapy Scope of Practice, and schedules patients for evaluation and treatment in a timely fashion. The employee reviews medical records to assess appropriateness of the referral and identify possible contraindications for treatment. The Physical Therapist performs examinations which include medical history, systems review, special tests and measures including neuromuscular, sensorimotor, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and/or respiratory functions as indicated. Tests are frequently complex and may need to be adapted because of multiple physical disabilities or present medical conditions. The therapist evaluates data gathered and makes clinical judgments based on examination to determine physical therapy diagnosis and prognosis. The employee plans and implements initial and subsequent treatment programs on the basis of their evaluation and demonstrates a broad professional understanding of contemporary and evidence based practice and its application through the use of therapeutic interventions. Examples of treatment provided by the therapist include: therapeutic exercises; functional training for home, community, and work; manual therapy techniques, electrotherapeutic modalities; physical agents and mechanical modalities; wound management and respiratory care. The therapist plans and implements appropriate patient education programs involving the patient, family and significant others in the instructional process, assists the clinical education coordinator in arranging and providing educational experiences for physical therapy students, and plans and presents in-service education programs on occasion. The Physical Therapist evaluates patient's needs for assistive devices, and adaptive appliances, recommends adjustments for prosthetic/orthotic devices and makes minor adjustments to obtain maximal functional benefits, and may fabricate orthotic devices and make modifications on a wide range of orthoses. The employee completes all patient care documentation in accordance with rehabilitation policy, submits necessary reports to section Program Coordinator, attends staff meetings, team meetings and ward rounds, and attends in-service training courses. The employee displays courtesy, civility and constructive behavior, and expresses empathy for the legitimate needs and concerns of others, and tailors patient care and/or support services to meet the needs of individual patients.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The employee works and functions in the medical center in a safe manner, including infection control and the correct operation of equipment.  

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee is required to follow safety practices and regulations.

WORK SCHEDULE: 56 hours per 2 week pay period, Schedule is flexible to accommodate the qualified candidate schedule; will include working Saturdays.

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  

Education.  Graduate from a degree program in physical therapy from an approved college or university approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). The CAPTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to accredit entry-level physical therapy programs. Licensure.  Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.  

English Language Proficiency.   Physical Therapists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3j. 


In addition to meeting the basic requirements, must possess at least 1 year of post degree progressively responsible experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-7)


Must possess a master's degree in physical therapy or a directly related field.


In addition, your experience must fully demonstrate the following KSAs:

· Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, kinesiology, psychology, pathophysiology and surgical procedures as they relate to human function.

· Knowledge of and ability to apply clinically appropriate assessment techniques and treatment interventions to address human pathophysiology and dysfunction.

· Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, and other healthcare professions.


In addition to meeting the basic requirements, must possess at least 1 full year of progressively complex experience and a broad scope of experience as a Physical Therapist that is equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9).  


Must possess 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in physical therapy or a directly related field.

Experience must include the KSAs of the next lower grade level (GS-9):

· Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, kinesiology, psychology, pathophysiology and surgical procedures as they relate to human function

· Knowledge of and ability to apply clinically appropriate assessment techniques and treatment interventions to address human pathophysiology and dysfunction.


In addition, your experience must fully demonstrate the following KSAs:

· Knowledge of contemporary and evidence-based PT practice.

· Ability to interpret clinician prescriptions and referrals.

· Skill in communicating, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, and other health care professions to facilitate the multidisciplinary treatment process.

· Skill in utilizing appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide direct patient care.

· Knowledge of clinical signs and symptoms to make appropriate referrals for further medical attention/assessment as indicated.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. It will be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level.
