JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Voice of America's South Asia Division. The incumbent serves as an International Broadcaster for the Dari service, with responsibility for the preparation and presentation of regular Dari-language programs. 

 

THIS POSITION IS COVERED BY A UNION AGREEMENT

The Broadcasting Board of Governors is conveniently located within walking distance to the Green, Yellow and Blue Metro lines.

 

INTRODUCTION TO AGENCY: The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency, is an exciting, multi cultural organization that encompasses all U.S. civilian international broadcasting. The BBG is comprised of the Voice of America, which delivers high quality, multimedia programming in 44 languages to audiences worldwide; the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti); the International Broadcasting Bureau, which provides transmission, administrative, and other support services; and three grantee organizations - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), and Radio Free Asia. Our staff of dedicated professionals serves as an example of a free and independent media, reaching a worldwide audience with news, information, and relevant discussions.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

~Translates/adapts significant proportion of English language news and news-related scripts into Dari, under intense time pressure.

~Announces/voices, either directly on-the-air or pre-recording, a variety of news and feature program materials, live and pre-recorded.

~Occasionally researches information and writes continuity for programs or original scripts on less-complicated subjects or according to assigned specifications.

~Produces live/pre-recorded air show segments and/or satellite feeds.

~Conducts interviews with people of interest for inclusion in programs and covers news events and other noteworthy events.

Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience  which is related directly to this line of work AND the ability to read, write and speak the Dari and English languages.

 

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.  Examples of such experience includes the use of the Dari language in radio, TV and Internet broadcasting. Work must have included writing, editing and/or voicing broadcast material from English into Dari. Qualifying specialized experience also includes work as a reporter, editor or news broadcaster for a recognized news publication; or for a wire service; or for a radio station. This experience must have provided a comprehensive knowledge of the history, customs and psychology of the target area people, as well as their political, economic, cultural and social life.

 


Education

The education requirements may be met by a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree OR an LL.M (if related).

 

Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

 

Graduate Education: Major study - journalism, communications, history, economics, political science, international relations or other fields related to this position.

Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a security investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The security investigation will include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.

 

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Examinations Required: Candidates who meet all education and/or experience requirements must demonstrate their knowledge and ability in language writing and translation through successful performance on a written examination and their ability to voice material for radio broadcast in a voice audition. You will be notified as to whether you will be scheduled for testing once qualification determinations have been made. APPLICANTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING THEIR OWN EXPENSES TO AND FROM TEST SITE.
