Advanced Practice Nurse or Clinical Nurse Specialist

CRITICAL CARE UNIT / SICU

Monday- Friday 7:30 – 4:00pm  

**With some off-shift tours/weekends

Alternate work schedule may be available

 

Requirements:

Must have APN OR CNS ADULT CRITICAL CARE CERTIFICATION FOR THIS POSITION (Required)

 

**Per the VA Handbook 5005/27 any APN/CNS hired after March 17, 2009 must have a certification in the specialty in which the individual is being appointed or selected. This also applies to any of our employees who graduated from an APN/CNS program after March 17, 2009. For example: If a APN is certified in Family Practice, Adult, or Women’s Health they should not be APN/CNS in Mental Health providing MH care. They can provide Medical Care to the Psychiatric patient but not PTSD therapy, SUD, MHICM, etc… Similarly, we do not want MH APN/CNS providing comprehensive Women’s Health. There is no waiver just because an nurse has experience in a particular area. Of note, if the APN/CNS was appointed/hired prior to March 17, 2009- they are grandfathered in.

 

The incumbent will be the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) on a twenty- bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and must have the knowledge base and ability to work directly with the unit’s staff and patients to enhance degree of critical thinking, judgments and   interventions to improve outcomes at the bedside. This individual will serve as a clinical expert for the critically ill patients at the Michael E. DeBakey Medical Center, mainly in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. This member will be instrumental in starting and building the education resource for SICU staff, especially establishing professional and specialized care to the cardiac surgery population and their families through patient and staff education, consultation, and clinical research.

 

Responsibilities: 

·         Ability to provide expert knowledge and skill in critical care practice setting to staff nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

·         Ability to develop and implement evidence based practice to improve quality of care and care outcomes in the critical care patient population.

·         Ability to share expertise with patients, their families, and the staff at the bedside as needed.

·         Ability to develop and provide formal education programs to ensure competency to function safely in the critical care setting.

·         Ability to plan and provide on-going education and resources to staff to support continued clinical development.

·         Ability to serve as a leader, consultant, and liaison for critical care services and nursing at MEDVAMC.

·         Ability to facilitate best nursing practices for the critically ill patients.

·         Ability to utilize sound judgment in making clinical decisions including the ability to accurately interpret and implement MEDVAMC and Nursing policies.

 

Responsibilities

·         Adheres to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice

·         Demonstrates leadership when providing nursing care

·         Functions in an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) role as Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist

·         Demonstrates competencies specific to Advanced Practice Nurse

·         Current RN registration

·         Registered with State BNE as an Advanced Practice Nurse

·         Current State Prescriptive Authority

·         Physical and intellectual capacity to satisfactorily perform assigned duties

·    Current ACLS certification. 

· Certified by a National credentialing examination as Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist in Specialty areas of Practice.

 

Scope of Practice

Scope of Practice will identify role specific competencies and define panel of patients.

 

Physical Standards and Environmental Factors

Compliant with the following physical standards and environmental factors;

  • Heavy lifting, 50 pounds Heavy carrying, 50 pounds & over
  • Straight pulling (1-2 hours); Pushing (1-2 hours); Walking (2-4 hours); Standing (2-6 hours)
  • Use of fingers
  • Both hands required;
  • Ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously
  • Near Vision correctable
  • Far Vision correctable
  • Depth perception
  • Hearing (aide permitted)
  • Work closely with others, as well as, protracted or irregular hours of work
  • Use stretchers to transfer patients and use patient lifts, if applicable

 Education and Experience

 

Masters degree (or grandfathered until 2005) from NLN accredited University as Nurse Practitioner / Clinical Nurse Specialist and approximately 2 - 3 years successful practice OR

 

Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 1 - 2 years successful practice

 

c  Certified by a National credentialing examination as Nurse Practitioner / Clinical Nurse Specialist in Specialty areas of Practice
