The Stratton VA Medical Center, part of VA Health Care Upstate New York, is located in the heart of Albany, New York. Located in the capital of New York State, this medical center serves veterans in a 100-mile radius. Opened in 1951, the medical center serves veterans in 22 counties of Upstate New York, Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

In 1990, this facility was named in honor of Samuel S. Stratton, U.S. Congressman of the 23rd District, a staunch supporter of veterans and a frequent visitor to the hospital. The medical center provides primary care, wellness and prevention outpatient care, and comprehensive primary, secondary and tertiary inpatient care in medicine, plus a full range of outpatient services. Veterans Benefit Counselors are available at this medical center, as well as a comfort home and hostel for outpatients and their families. Our Voluntary Service office supports the delivery of veteran health services through volunteerism and donations from community and service organizations in the Albany area.

The primary care program provides services at the medical center and at several community based outpatient clinics in: Glens Falls, Sidney, Elizabethtown, Schenectady, Troy, Kingston, Plattsburgh, Malone, Clifton Park, Fonda, and Catskill, as well as one in Bennington, Vermont. These practices serve an integral role in the provision of expanded primary and preventive medical services.

The full time Geriatric Primary Care Physician in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Line at the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, New York will be responsible for providing comprehensive primary and consultative care within the Geriatric Primary Care Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model.  He/she will ensure that the VA mission, vision and values are achieved, while operating in accordance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policies and standards of accrediting agencies external to the VA.  The physician will contribute to the educational mission of the VA through teaching medical residents and other health care professionals as applicable.  He/she will serve on assigned interdisciplinary teams and medical center committees, which continually strive for excellence in patient care and customer service.  The physician will provide on call off-tour coverage of Geriatrics on a rotational basis with other physicians in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Line.


The full-time Medical Director for the Home Based Primary Care Program position integrates direct care and clinical leadership of the Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) Program and is designed to foster innovative models of care for a broad range of patients and may be tailored to the special skills and interests of the physician.  The applicant selected will provide leadership as the HBPC Medical Director, working collaboratively with the HBPC Program Director, provide clinical guidance to mid-level providers, provide comprehensive primary care within the HBPC Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) HBPC model and assist in teaching resident physicians or students.   The physician will provide on call off-tour coverage of Geriatrics on a rotational basis with other physicians in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Line.

  • U.S. citizenship (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 Chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g).
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.  The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
  • Possess and maintain a full, unrestricted license to practice medicine from any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia;
  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine or Family Practice
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Geriatrics
  • BLS Certified
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7405(f).

Candidates must have a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Drug Testing:  This is a testing designated position (TDP) under the VA Drug-Free Workplace Program.  If you are tentatively selected for the position and are not now in a TDP subject to random testing, you may be subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to final selection.  Applicants who refuse to be tested will not be selected.


Physical Requirements:  Selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a medical examination.

Leave and Holidays

·         Full-time physicians/dentists earn 26 days of paid annual (vacation/personal) leave each year and may accumulate up to 120 days.  Annual leave begins to accrue immediately and can be used as it is earned (with supervisory approval).

·         Full-time physicians/dentists earn 13 days of sick leave each year with no limit on accumulation.

·         Part-time physicians/dentists earn a pro-rated amount of annual and sick leave based on their work schedule.

·         Military leave is authorized up to 15 days each year for active reservists and National Guard members.

·         There are 10 paid Federal holidays per year.


Health and Life Insurance

·         VA offers a variety of group health insurance plans with premiums partially paid by the Federal Government.  You can change plans yearly.  Employee contributions vary from plan to plan and are also determined based on work schedule (full-time vs. part-time).

·         Term life insurance with coverage based on salary is available with the cost shared by the Federal Government.  Family and additional coverage options are available.


Liability Protection

·         VA physicians/dentists are covered under the Federal Tort Claims Act.  The United States Government accepts responsibility and liability for the actions of its employees during the exercise of their official duties.  VA physicians/dentists, therefore, are protected by the Federal Government in instances of alleged malpractice or negligence resulting from the performance of their duties in or for the Veterans Health Administration.  Therefore, VA physicians/dentists are not required to carry personal malpractice insurance.



·         Newly hired employees are covered by the Federal Employees’ Retirement System (FERS).  FERS is a three-tier retirement plan composed of Social Security benefits, FERS basic benefits, and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).  Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax-defer as much as 13 percent of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service.  The Federal Government also provides a basic contribution and matching, depending on the amount of the employee contribution.


Salary Information

·         Each grade level has of 10 steps. 

·         Starting salaries and grades recommended by a Physician/Dentist Professional Standards Board based on professional education/training/experience.

·         Physicians/Dentists appointed at less than the 10th step of the grade are awarded increases within each grade based on demonstrated performance and may receive accelerated increases for outstanding performance or achievement.
