The Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Nuclear Physics, is seeking a motivated and highly qualified individual to serve as a recognized scientific authority and expert in experimental medium energy nuclear physics. See Duty Section for additional information.

If selected for this position, you will: - Serve as a recognized scientific authority and expert in nuclear physics, in particular medium energy nuclear physics, and as such have the responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in this field on a national and international level. - Serve as a Program Manager determining scientific focus and direction of the medium energy nuclear physics science aspects of the research program, preparing calls for proposals organizing independent peer reviews, recommending funding allocations, organizing Principal Investigator meetings, serving as a liaison on committees, and monitoring scientific progress of the program. - Examine and ascertain pioneering research needs and opportunities of this research program against scientific and technological advances and of potential needs of the Department of Energy. - Prepare, justify, and support the portions of the budget relating to the nuclear data and nuclear theory computing program. - Critically evaluate contractor, DOE laboratory, and grantee research proposals and performance via own scientific and technical judgment, merit review, site visits, and reviews, and panel reviews.

You must possess one year of experience performing duties in the area of Physics. You must also demonstrate experience in the following: (1) medium energy nuclear physics; (2) planning, directing, and evaluating new and highly complex basic research programs, projects, and policies; (3) communicating in writing to prepare analytical documents and/or research findings; (4) communicating orally to serve as a spokesperson for the organization in the broad scientific areas of responsibility and (5) planning budgeting, justifying and allocating funds among a variety of competing programs and requirements. NOTE: Your resume must demonstrate the experience required for this position.


You must have a degree in physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. OR A combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and quantum mechanics.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT FOR THIS VACANCY: A preliminary background check must be initiated before you can begin work with the U.S. Department of Energy.  Current Federal employees or other individuals with an existing completed background investigation may not be required to undergo another background check; these will be handled on a case-by-case basis in coordination with the Security Office.

Failure to receive a favorable background investigation will result in termination from employment.

This position is subject to drug testing.  If selected, you must test negative prior to being appointed to this position and will be subject to random testing thereafter.  Failure to pass subsequent tests could result in disciplinary action, up to and including removal from the Federal service.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Your application will be evaluated and rated under Category Rating and Selection procedures. Category rating combines the applicant's total qualifying experience and education/training into a single quality category. If you meet the basic qualification requirements, we will further evaluate your entire application package to determine the quality and extent of your experience, education, training, etc., for placement in one of the following categories: 1) Highly Qualified - Exceeds the minimum qualification requirements and all requirements of the position; 2) Well Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and nearly all requirements of the position; 3) Qualified - Meets the minimum qualification requirements. The Category Rating Process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within appropriate category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Highly Qualified) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless approval has been granted.
