You will provide assistance to the FOD and Deputy FOD in managing the day-to-day operations and procedures of the detention and removal activity throughout the Field Office area of responsibility. The ability to direct and coordinate the execution of varied and extensive functions in coordination with other operations of ICE and other federal agencies, foreign and domestic, is required. Specifically, you will:

  • Serve as a technical expert and liaison in developing and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders in the Federal government, private industry and state and local law enforcement agencie;
  • Provide advice and guidance to agency managers (field and headquarters) for matters relative to organizational operations, policies, and requirements;
  • Direct, coordinate and oversee the work through subordinate supervisors (or team leaders);
  • Make decisions on work problems presented by subordinate supervisors; and
  • Exercise significant authority in dealing with officials of other units/organizations and in advising management officials of higher rank on operational issues.

You qualify for the GS-14 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-13 level performing duties such as:

  • Serving as an expert who conducts legal research and investigations of highly complex, precedent-setting, and sensitive deportation/exclusion cases;
  • Makes decisions on complex deportation reconsideration requests involving jurisdictional issues;
  • Represents the agency at hearings and other forums on agency-wide detention and deportation activities and operations;
  • Applies a wide range of analytical management processes and systems agency-wide; and
  • Develops and implements agency-wide detention and deportation policies.

Requirements:

Requirements by Closing Date: Unless otherwise noted, you must meet all requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Time in Grade: Current Federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the Federal service. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Medical/Physical: You must pass a pre employment medical examination. Prior to appointment, the person selected for this position must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician.

Firearms Requirement: You will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties of this position. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory. You must satisfactorily complete (or have previously completed) the firearms component of the ICE Training Program at Glynco, Georgia. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment.

Work Conditions: This job requires protracted periods of strenuous physical exertion. Surveillance frequently require extended periods of sitting, standing, walking and crawling through a variety of terrain. The officer typically works long and irregular hours, on weekends, holidays and at night.

Secondary Law Enforcement: The Supvy Detention and Deportation Officer (AFOD) position is an approved Secondary Law Enforcement position under 5 USC 8331 (20) and 5 USC 8401 (17). Previous experience in a primary (rigorous) law enforcement position (or equivalent outside the Federal Government) is a prerequisite.

Travel: You will be required to travel frequently.

Motor Vehicle Operation: You must possess a valid state automobile drivers license at the time of appointment.

Completion of Training: You must have successfully completed Basic Immigration Law Enforcement Training in accordance with 8 CFR 287.1(g) and other applicable agency policy. This includes successful completion of the Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention & Removal Operations (DRO) Basic Immigration Law Enforcement Training Program; the legacy Immigration Officer Basic Training Course (IOBTC); the Border Patrol Academy; the combination of both the legacy Basic Immigration Detention Enforcement Officer Training Course and the ICE DRO Equivalency Training Program (ETP); the ICE Special Agent Training Program; the combination of FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program and the DRO Equivalency Training Program for Special Agents (ETPSA) and for legacy US Customs Special Agents, the ICE / Customs Special Agent Cross Training Program. Due to regulatory requirements, no other training will be accepted. Please note, if selected, you may be required to submit proof of completion (i.e. training certificates).

Note: Selectees who have not previously held a position as a Deportation Officer, Detention and Deportation Officer, Supervisory Deportation Officer, or Supervisory Detention and Deportation Officer and have not previously attended the three-week Deportation Officer Transition Program (DOTTP) will be required to do so after entrance on duty.

Supervisory/Managerial Probationary Period: You may be required to serve a twelve-month probationary period upon appointment to this position. You may also be required to complete an appropriate supervisory training course within the one year of assignment to this position.

Supervisory/Managerial Probationary Period: This is a supervisory position, under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period.
