Johnson VA Medical Center serves more than 53,000 veterans in 22 counties along the South Carolina and Georgia coastline in our main Medical Center or one of six community-based outpatient clinics.   The main Medical Center provides acute medical, surgical, and psychiatric inpatient care, as well as outpatient primary and mental health care to low country veterans who require more then 659,000 outpatient visits and approximately 4,300 inpatient stays annually.  The 117 bed hospital currently operates 96 beds and a 28 bed nursing home unit.  Charleston VAMC supports the Vet Centers in North Charleston, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia.

The VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC, has a vacancy for a full-time Physician Assistant in the specialty of Urology in our Surgical Service providing care to veteran patients.

Surgery Service,  Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) to provide services in our Urology service and will report directly to the Chief of Urology for clinical and administrative duties.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the care and administrative needs of surgical patients in in patient and outpatient settings, and will also function as a coordinator between attending physicians and the other team members to include nursing.  CLINICAL duties include Outpatient-Admission history and physicals, admission orders, consult screening and evaluation, pre-operative work ups, and assist as needed with ward patients; provide medical education/counseling of patients and their families; manage clinic patients; as needed assisting urology team in the operating room, prepping and draping and first and second assist in surgery; prescribing appropriate medication; and serving as a Clinical Facilitator integrating the activities of the urology surgery service with other facility programs.  ADMINISTRATIVE duties include planning, organizing, coordinating, evaluating the care provided on urology surgery services and reporting recommendations to the Chief of each service line.  EDUCATIONAL assignments include developing and implementing topic-based in-service training for primary care providers within the sub specialty field of urology surgery to encourage appropriate and  timely referrals; actively participating in the education of residents and students.  RESEARCH assignments include participating in merit-reviewed, approved research projects to develop publishable material for appropriate professional journals.

Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday 8:00 - 4:30 pm

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.  (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)

b. Education or Training. The candidate must meet one of the following:
(1)  A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); OR
(2)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; OR
(3)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician.  The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

(4) Minimum of 18 months experience working in advanced, specialty-specific urologic practice is HIGHLY PREFERRED.
c. Certification.  As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.  This requirement does not apply to non-certified PA's on VA rolls as of that date.

d. Physical Standards. Meet meet the physical standards established for this position.

e. English Language Proficiency.  Applicants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.
