The Samuel S. Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking full-time Physician Assistants to join an established team for management of inpatient services for patients on various Surgery Services.  The position responsibilities include, but are not limited to admitting patients from the Emergency Department and from other locations as well as handling direct admissions, initial evaluation of some surgical consultations in the ED with direct communication with attending level surgical staff; providing care for hospitalized patients on Surgical Services; discharging patients from acute care to other levels of care within the Medical Center or to home; collaboration with primary care and home care providers at discharge; and transferring patients to other units within the hospital. Candidates must be available to work 12 hour shifts (6PM – 6AM) weeknights and day or night 12 hour shifts (6AM-6PM or 6PM-6AM) including weekends and holidays.  Candidates must be skilled in basic invasive procedures appropriate for hospital practice and certified by their appropriate professional board.

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT QUALIFICATIONS:

 

a.  Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

 

b.  Education or Training.  The candidate must meet one of the following:

 

     (1)  A bachelor’s degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or

 

     (2)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor’s degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or

 

     (3)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician.  The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

 

c.  Certification.  As of  March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.  This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

 

d.  Physical Standards.  Selected candidate will be required to pass a medical examination in which there are physical requirements.

 

e.  English Language Proficiency.  PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

 

f.  Restriction.  Under no circumstances may this occupation be used to employ physicians or other health care providers who do not meet the applicable qualification standards for their occupation.  All physician assistants must meet the requirements in subparagraphs a through e above.
