This position is that of a Physical Scientist in the Operations Department at the National Ice Center (NIC), Suitland, MD. The primary focus of the position is providing quality ice analysis, forecasts, discussions and briefings to the internal and external customers of the NIC. Secondary focuses are the quality control of NIC products and training new Ice Analysts. The Operations Department produces sea ice analyses and forecasts for the Arctic and Antarctic and fresh water ice products for the Great Lakes, Chesapeake/Delaware Bays, and the U.S. Northeast coast. The department prepares, verifies and disseminates unclassified and classified environmental information to the United States Government, primarily the Department of Defense (Navy), Commerce (NOAA) and Homeland Security (U.S. Coast Guard), U.S. Government sponsored organizations, the Polar science community, and other national and international clients. Members of this department also conduct briefings and represent the NIC at various conferences and meetings throughout the world.

  • Interpreting visible, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, passive microwave, and altimeter data to locate and identify sea ice.
  • Interpreting meteorological data used to predict sea ice.
  • Using knowledge of imagery data to interpret visible, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, scatterometer, and passive microwave imagery.
  • Interpreting visible, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, passive microwave, and altimeter data to analyze sea ice.
  • Updating ice analyses or forecasts to ensure optimum support.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS for a Physical Scientist (1301):

Have a Degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. NOTE:  You must submit a copy of your college transcripts.

OR

Have a combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown that include at least 24 semester hours in Physical Science and/or related Engineering Science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE: This information must be supported in your resume to be considered for the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for a Physical Scientist (1301):

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Receiving clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use in sea ice analysis; performing routine calculating, plotting, analyzing, and checking of numerical data. NOTE: This information must be supported in your resume to be considered for the position.

 

OR Have 1 year of graduate-level education in physical science, engineering, or mathematics, mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and/or electronics. NOTE:  You must submit a copy of your college transcripts.

OR You must have a degree that meets the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement through one of the following methods:

*2.95 GPA overall or last 2 yrs (= 10% Pass/Fail)
*3.45 GPA overall or last 2 yrs in major (= 10% Pass/Fail)
*Upper 1/3 ranking in graduating class (you must submit proof with your application)
*National Scholastic Honor Society. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the   requirements of this provision. (You must submit proof with your application)
*Have successfully completed (or will complete by June 30, 2013) a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a Bachelor of Engineering or higher degree in an accredited college or university.  

OR Have a combination of experience and education, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement.

REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Demands:  The incumbent will work while sitting at a desk or computer workstations as well as standing over work tables. He/She spends considerable time working on computer systems. Occasional travel is required for attendance at training courses, professional meetings and briefings at other activities. This incumbent WILL be required to work weekends on a rotational basis.

This position has promotion potential to the 11 grade. If selected below the full performance level, incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management.
