The IHS is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN).   The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level.  IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal and Urban operated facilities and programs.   For information on the IHS visit IHS.GOV.

The mission of the IHS Office of Clinical and Preventive Services (OCPS), is to provide overall patient care policy and program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. OCPS carries out this responsibility through several broad functional activities provided by five divisions to include Behavioral Health, Clinical and Community Services, Nursing Services, Oral Health, and Diabetes Treatment and Prevention. The Deputy Director shares responsibility with the Director, OCPS in the management and supervision of OCPS.  The Deputy Director reports to the Director, OCPS.

  • Develop new policies, programs and practices for IHS application.  
  • Implement new organizational or programmatic changes and resolve problems.
  • Conducts operational analyses of on-going programs and budgets in order to identify methods for improving services and/or improving cost effectiveness.
  • Reviews and continuously evaluates the results achieved.
