JOB SUMMARY:

The mission of the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is to increase food security and reduce hunger in partnership with cooperating organizations by providing children and low-income people with access to food, a healthy diet, and nutrition education in a manner that supports American agriculture and inspires public confidence.

Two positions under this vacancy will be assigned to Special Nutrition Programs (SNP). SNP provides nutrition assistance through programs administered by State Agencies and Indian Tribal Organizations. Programs include: Child & Adult Care Food Program; School Lunch & Breakfast Programs; Special Milk Program; Summer Food Service Program; Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program; Team Nutrition; Food Distribution Program; and The Emergency Food Assistance Program. One position is located in the Community Nutrition Program Branch; the other position is located in the School Nutrition Program Branch.

    The incumbent for the Community Nutrition Program Branch will have primary oversight for the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) but may also be involved with other programs including the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the Food Distribution Program.

    The Incumbent for the School Nutrition Program Branch will have oversight responsibilities for all school food programs.

    FNS provides food, funding, technical assistance and monitors program activities to ensure program integrity in the administration of SNP Programs Incumbents will be responsible for disseminating program rules, guidance, and policy within their assigned programs. They will also conduct reviews of State agency operations to ensure compliance with program regulations and procedures. In addition, incumbents will prepare trend analysis, identify problem areas, and propose recommendations to senior officials for improvements in program operations.

    Time-in-Grade:
    For the GS-12 level: Candidates must have been a GS-11 for 52 weeks (when applicable).

    Time After Competitive Appointment:
    Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
    Minimum Qualification Requirement: 

    Specialized Experience:
    For GS-12 level: You must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes analyzing or administering a federal nutrition assistance program or related public assistance program.

    Notes: The experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.

    • Skill to provide ongoing guidance and technical assistance to lead projects, reviews, or other initiatives.
