The Alexandria VA Health Care System is seeking a Nurse Practitioner  to support the mission, vision, and guiding principles of the Medical Center. The Alexandria VA Health Care System, Alexandria, Louisiana is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans within 23 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes.  The VAMC is located in Pineville, Louisiana with community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Jennings, Lafayette, Fort Polk, and Natchitoches, Louisiana.

The Nurse Practitioner will practice in the Mental Health Clinic setting. The Nurse Practitioner provides psychiatric/substance abuse treatment to adults in the area of the Nurse Practitioner clinical specialization.  Care includes the following:  initiating and adjusting therapeutic regimens and prescribing medications/supplies in accordance with VA policy, VA Formulary, state regulations and scope of practice.    The Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively with other interdisciplinary team members in providing quality care, patient education, and assisting patients in acute and chronic rehabilitation techniques.  The Nurse Practitioner serves on appropriate/assigned committees and assists in the development, evaluation and communication of policies and standards in his/her field.  The Nurse Practitioner will be required to provide on-site and telephonic consultations for patients requiring psychiatric care as referred by peer staff, Primary Care physicians and all Health Care Lines.  The Psychiatrist is required to document all reports and patient interventions in the patient's medical record according to recoding standards.  Quality improvement activities will be monitored to ensure compliance with all applicable Joint Commission and Medical Center standards.  This individual will participate in other activities and programs beneficial to the Medical Center and/or CBOC, including committees, task forces and investigations.   Incumbent will maintain current BLS certifications. Board Certification:  Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner  - Board Certification (PMHNP-BC).

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Citizen of the United States. 

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.    Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master’s degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.  Current NP license with national certification (must be accredited by the National League for Nursing) and prescriptive authority privileges with eligibility of function under an approved scope of practice.  Excellent organization and communication skill within an interdisciplinary team is a must.  Computer skills in Microsoft Word and Outlook and in computerized patient record system required.  Applicant must have ACLS Certification.

On and after [March 17, 2009], registered nurses appointed or otherwise moving into these assignments must meet and maintain the following additional qualifications. This includes employees appointed before [March 17, 2009], who obtain such qualifications on or after [March 17, 2009.]   Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master’s degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.   Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.     Education/Experience Requirements: 

  • Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience. 
  • Board Certification as an Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
