What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is an interdisciplinary position that may be filled as a Physical Scientist or Geophysicist and is being advertised concurrently with the following announcements: Open to current or former Federal employees through Merit Promotion procedures at ATL-2012-0714.

As a Physical Scientist or Geophysicist within the Office of Natural Hazards, some of your specific duties will include:

-Coordinate the Earthquake Hazards Program seismic, geodetic and geomagnetic monitoring activities, including the Global Seismographic Network (GSN) and Geomagnetism Program.

-Plan and implement the ANSS and ensure the coordinated operations under ANSS of all seismic and geodetic networks and related data centers supported by the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program.

-Serve as the primary spokesperson for ANSS matters, articulating the goals, capabilities and benefits of ANSS.

-Oversee the work of the ANSS National Implementation Committee (NIC) in order to schedule, plan, organize and facilitate NIC meetings.

-Participate in and present information at national conferences and symposia.

Physical Scientist GS-1301

In addition to the basic education requirements, to qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have 1-year of professional specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include: serving as a senior expert involved in physical science work for which technical problem definitions, methods &/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain, representing an authoritative source of consultation for others, resolving significant issues affecting physical science programs, making long range & controversial proposals & defending findings in public/high level forums.

To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have 1-year of professional specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include: planning/developing scientific programs; serving as senior expert in physical science. work for which technical problem definitions, methods &/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain; representing an authoritative source of consultation for others; resolving significant physical science program issues; long-range & controversial proposals & defending findings in public/high level forums.

In addition to the basic education requirements, to qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have 1-year of professional specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include: serving as a senior expert involved in geophysics work for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert in geophysics.

To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, you must have 1-year of professional specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include:  investigations that involved highly unstructured and interconnected problems involving both difficult technology and complex human relations or programmatic issues.
