Johnson VA Medical Center serves more than 53,000 veterans in 22 counties along the South Carolina and Georgia coastline in our main Medical Center or one of six community-based outpatient clinics.   The main Medical Center provides acute medical, surgical, and psychiatric inpatient care, as well as outpatient primary and mental health care to low country veterans who require more than 659,000 outpatient visits and approximately 4,300 inpatient stays annually.  The 117 bed hospital currently operates 96 beds and a 28 bed nursing home unit.  Charleston VAMC supports the Vet Centers in North Charleston, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia.

The VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC, has  vacancies for three (3) part-time physicians in the specialty of Surgical Critical Care.

These are part time positions working 5 hours per Week on a Flexible Schedule

Your salary and grade will be determined by the Professional Standards Board (PSB).  The PSB is a peer review process.  The PSB will review your individual qualifications, education, professional training/internship(s) and professional experience to determine the most appropriate salary and grade based on your individual accomplishments.

Minimum to maximum salary quotes are based on full time employment.  Part time salaries are prorated.

The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, Charleston SC, is recruiting three (3) part time (5 hours per week) Surgical Critical Specialists to work a flexible schedule.  These provders will help Surgical Services build a multi-disciplinary surgical critical care team to provide state of the art care to Veterans.  The duties will be carried out at the main Ralph H. Johnson VA medical center in Charleston S.C.  Experience is needed in managing critically ill patients in a surgical setting is mandatory; and requires the ability to work collaboratively with multiple surgical patients including general, vascular, cardiac, thoracic, ENT, urology, orthopedics and neurosurgery. 

The successful candidates should have a strong academic background as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and a history of academic excellence.  S/he should possess outstanding education/managerial skills and have experience in resident education.

Basic Requirements

Citizenship:  Must be a U.S. Citizen of the United States (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.)  

Education:  Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine? The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. 

Licensure and Registration:  Current, full and unrestricted license to practice in any state, territory or commonwealth of the United States, District of Columbia. 

English Language Proficiency:  Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English. 

First-Year Residency:  Completed first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.  For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training.  Approved residences are:

          a.  Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

         b.  Other residences or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.  The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of post-graduate education. 

Physical Standards:  Placement in this position is subject to meeting the physical requirements of this position.  Pre-placement medical examination is required.   

Preferred Qualifications:  

A.    Experience managing critically ill patients in a surgical setting.

B.    Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care.

C.  Fellowship training in Transplant/Trauma/Cardiac Surgery welcome.

D.  Ability to manage multiple surgical patients including - general, vascular, cardiac, thoracic, ENT, urology, and neurosurgery.

E.  Evidence of Teaching Ability documented by teaching experience.

F.  Academic interests as evidenced by published articles and national presentations.

G.  Current competence as evidenced  by peer reviews, letters of recommendation and continuing medical education activities.
