What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

As a Social Scientist within the Fort Collins Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

 

-Conduct research focusing on human dimensions/social science of climate change.

-Plan and facilitate workshops on the human dimensions of climate change for social scientists and managers.

-Identify and synthesize existing social science climate change assessments protocols and indicators used by Federal land managers in both the community and landscape levels.

-Manage the logistics of survey research in the area of human dimensions of natural resources, including the use of social science related statistical and database software.

Applicants must meet one of the following Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience equivalent to 4 years -- that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study.

    OR

  3. Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to the basic education requirements, Applicants must possess professional specialized experience or directly related graduate education that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

 

For GS-9, Applicants must meet one of the following

 

1)  2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree

OR

2)   1 year of professional experience equivalent to at least GS-7 level in the Federal government.  Examples of GS-7 experience may involve:  assisting with social science projects/studies related to the human dimensions of climate change, e.g., participating in research efforts; collecting data; contributing to technical reports.  

OR

3)  Possess a combination of graduate level education as described, beyond the first year of progressive graduate study, and appropriate specialized experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position

 

For GS-11,  Applicants must meet one of the following:

 

1)  3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

OR

2)  1 year of professional experience equivalent to at least GS-9 level in the Federal government.  Examples of GS-9 experience may involve:  supporting social science projects/studies related to the human dimensions of climate change, e.g., participating in research efforts; collecting and analyzing social and economic data; identifying and analyzing land use issues; measuring human factors associated with natural resources; preparing technical reports.

OR

3)  Possess a combination of graduate level education as described, beyond the first two years of progressive graduate study, and appropriate specialized experience, that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

 

One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
