This position is that of A Chemist and is located in the Analytical/Environmental Chemistry Branch (Code 134.1),

 Mid-Atlantic Regional Calibration and Materials Test Laboratory, Quality Assurance Office, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia.

The incumbent analyzes and evaluates industrial samples by utilizing and operating a wide variety of laboratory analytical instruments such as: atomic absorption spectrophotometers, Inductively Coupled Plasma spectrometers, Optical Emission Spectrometer, and Micro-wave Digestion instrumentation, to determine whether the material is in compliance with Military and Federal standards, Naval Ship Technical Manual (NSTM), American Society of Testing Materials Procedures (ASTM), shipyard permits and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and other technical publications and requirements.

BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR CHEMIST

You MUST possess a degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. Or, 

Have a combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

 

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 

1) Experience applying the principles and theories of chemistry as that acquired by completion of the requirements for a Bachelor's of Science Degree in the field of Chemistry.

2) Experience in calibrating and operating advanced instrumentation, i.e. Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, Inductively coupled Plasma Spectrometer, Gas Chromatograph, Ion   Chromatograph, color analyzer and Total Carbon Analyzer.

3) Experience evaluating specific instrument uses in the analyses of industrial material sample investigation.

4) Experience reaching solutions to assignments which frequently require complex, involved chemistry and often require interaction and familiarity with other science disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and electronics.

REQUIREMENTS:
