JOB SUMMARY:

Become a part of the Department that touches the lives of every American!  Join HHS/FDA/Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) and help to make our world healthier, safer and better for all Americans.  CTP is the newest arm of the FDA.  CTP is the principal Federal agency charged to establish tobacco product regulations in order to decrease the tremendous toll of disease, disability and death caused by tobacco use in the United States.

This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), Office of Science (OS), in Rockville, MD.

Serves as a scientific expert and reviewer, keeping up with the literature and scientific developments.  Develops research projects to fill gaps in knowledge related to regulatory decisions; provides scientific support in developing guidance; reviews documents submitted for regulatory action; advises management on issues related to scientific subject matter.  Provides expert assistance to other professionals within and outside the function located domestically and/or abroad.

Basic Requirements for Biologist, GS-0401-12/13.

All applicants must have successfully completed a full 4 year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirements in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Have a combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major, as described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must have been sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skill, and abilities required to perform Biologist work, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4 year course of study with a major study in one of the appropriate fields.


In addition, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

GS-12: Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience in the fields of biology, pharmacology, toxicology or related fields that is related to the control and prevention of disease or injury.

 

GS-13: Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience providing leadership and guidance in the fields of biology, pharmacology, toxicology or related fields that is related to the control and prevention of disease or injury.

Basic Requirements for Pharmacologist, GS-0405-12/13.

All applicants must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor`s or higher degree with a major in an appropriate biological, medical, veterinary, or physical science, or in pharmacy that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry and physiology and 12 semester hours in pharmacology.

In addition, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

GS-12: Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience in the fields of biology, pharmacology, toxicology or related fields that is related to the control and prevention of disease or injury.

GS-13: Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience providing leadership and guidance in the fields of biology, pharmacology, toxicology or related fields that is related to the control and prevention of disease or injury.

 

Basic Qualification Requirements for Toxicologist, GS-0415-12/13.

 

All applicants must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor`s or higher degree in toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

In addition, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

GS-12: Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience in the fields of biology, pharmacology, toxicology or related fields that is related to the control and prevention of disease or injury.

Documenting experience:  In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Skill in oral communication sufficient to advise scientists and others in the application of Agency rules, regulations and procedures and negotiate acceptance and implementation of recommendations.

 

Knowledge of scientific research processes related to tobacco and/or nicotine.
