The Oncology & Hematology subspecialty population is seen in the Cancer Center of Excellence.  This patient population includes the following patients who receive their primary care at the hospital as well as those receiving care at the CBOC'S (Community Based Outpatient Clinics, the VA's stand alone ambulatory care clinics); patients managed via the V-TEL system as part of the VA's Rural Health Program; Oncology inpatients on NU4B.  Incumbent provides the comprehensive range of social work services for all patients and families identified, regardless of the complexity of the problem.  The Oncology Social Worker attends Tumor Boards, Oncology conferences, staff meetings & Oncology training events.  Incumbent communicates with team members to ensure a coordinated treatment program with timely and cost-effective outcomes.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Candidates must meet all the requirements identified in the VA Qualification Standard for Social Worker, GS-185, as set forth in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-39. 

 

Candidates must meet all the requirements identified in the VA Qualification Standard for Social Worker, GS-185 as set forth in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G39.  A Master's Degree in Social Work from a school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work education is also a basic requirement.  In addition to meeting all basic requirements, at least two years should be in an area of specialized social work practice.  This experience must have been in a clinical setting, medical center, clinic (medical or psychiatric), a residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession in a clinical setting.  This experience must have demonstrated broad knowledge of social work and superior skill and judgment in professional practice.  For positions with social work program administration responsibilities, the required experience must have included supervision or program management in a social work program.  Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice).  In addition, you will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOS) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position.  although you are not required to submit essay-style responses to the individual KSAs in your resume/application package, it  must contain enough detailed information to clearly show that you possess the following KSAs:     1.  Advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness.  Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice.  Ability to determine priority for services and provide specialized treatment services;  2. Advanced and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations.  This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management interventions used in the treatment of veterans with polytraumatic injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.; 3.  Advanced knowledge and expert skill in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services.  Ability to coordinate the delivery of specialized psychosocial services and programs.  Ability to design system changes based on empirical findings; 4.  Ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients treated in the specialty area, rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills.  Ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or for specialty certifications;  5.  Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, demonstrating innovation in the creation of new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention to identify and address specialized clinical needs.  Ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the specialty population or specialty treatment program.
