The Medical Supply Technician is responsible for the procurement, storage, distribution, and inventory control of medical supplies for use in the various sections and service lines of the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). This is to include, but not limited to patient wards, units, specialty clinics, Operating Room (Surgery), Endoscopy, Laboratory, Radiology, and Dental service lines. The Technician receives, stores, distributes sterile and general supplies and equipment used in patient care in various hospital wards, services, and clinics.  Items may be of a disposable or reusable nature and include instruments, medical equipment, trays and sets, and various other items. 

Duties associated with this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Ordering, receiving, storage, preparation, and distribution of supplies to hospital wards and/or clinics.
  • Processing of orders for supplies in accordance with purchase procedures and policies.
  • Exchanging, inspecting, and re-supplying of items to insure adequate availability for timely delivery.
  • Maintaining both primary and secondary storage areas in clean/sterile state, in accordance with regulation and local policy.
  • Advises, updates, and explains changes in medial supplies to clinical and ward personnel.
  • Provides technical assistance in applicable matters (troubleshooting, inventory turn-around times, etc.)
  • Follows established procedures designed to ensure clean and safe storage of transportation of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Work Schedule: The tour of duty is primarily day tour.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Time-in-grade:  Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
GS-5 Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at the the next lower grade (GS-4).  Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to; processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, storing, and issuing sterile and un-sterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of preparation, storage procedures; and knowledge of aseptic techniques. Experience in surgical or endoscopic clinics is preferred.

OR

EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: A 4-year course of study above the high school level, leading to a bachelor’s degree with courses related to the occupation may be substituted for the specialized experience requirement at the GS-5 grade level.

OR  

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level.  To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned).  Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess.  Add the two percentages.  The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-05. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.  A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position.

·         Knowledge of inventory policies and procedures.

·         Knowledge of storage of supplies and stock rotation.

·         Ability to interpret, apply, adhere to guidelines for Logistics; using the hand books and other  

     policies and procedures.

·         Knowledge of procedures, operations, and medical terminology to perform interrelated assignments

     requiring training and experience, for a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures.

·         Ability to communicate orally.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  Work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for prolonged periods of time, carrying medical supply items weighing up to 50 pounds, frequent bending and stretching/reaching, and pushing fully loaded medical supply carts weighing as much as 750 pounds which must be negotiated up inclines and over rises, or positioning them on sterilizer track rails.  The work requires dexterity in such tasks as precisely aligning component parts while reassembling medical equipment.  Tension and stress are induced by the critical nature of producing work results critical to patient care on pre-established time frames and in emergent situations. Work days can be lengthened without notice by emergency supply needs.
