JOB SUMMARY:

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides leadership in a partnership effort to help conserve, maintain, and improve our natural resources and environment. http://www.nrcs.usda.gov 

 

NRCS in Texas is recruiting students to participate in the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP).  Up to 2 Student Trainee ( Agricultural Engineering) positions are available throughout Texas through this program.  For more information about NRCS locations in Texas click on this link TEXAS .

 

Positions to be filled are Student Trainees in Agricultural Engineering.  The program allows students to gain real, paid work experience while pursuing a college degree in a particular career field. Work locations vary each summer, and the duties and locations are designed to provide hands-on experience and training in the specific discipline for which hired.  Students who successfully complete all work, study, qualifications, and other eligibility requirements may be offered permanent positions with our agency upon graduation.

Specific locations will be determined at time of offer of employment.

Students selected to participate in this program are expected to work full-time each summer until a qualifying degree has been awarded and may lead to permanent employment after successfully completing the educational and work experience requirements.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

The trainee position provides intensive and specialized training in the field of work related to the student's major field of study.   Students will be involved with productive, hands-on job assignments involved with the conservation and enhancement of Texas' natural resources.

 

Civil/Agricultural Engineering work includes:

Ø Accompany engineers, engineering technicians (civil), and/or soil conservation technicians in gathering basic data and field information used in the design of engineering practices

Ø Assists with drafting engineering plans from design notes, sketches and verbal instructions

Ø Accompanying field engineers to observe methods used in providing technical assistance for resource conservation projects

 

These are developmental positions designed to provide training in the application of a variety of soil and water conservation practices. The student will work with experienced employees; performing a wide variety of duties tailored to the specific discipline the student is pursuing (i.e. Agricultural Engineering, etc.). Some of the duties may include gathering, calculating, and analyzing various types of field resource data; learning to operate tools, equipment, and computer software related to the target profession; receiving training in the use of soil survey maps, technical standards, agency guides, and other available guidelines; becoming familiar with the aims and objectives of the Natural Resources Conservation Service; and assisting in the planning and development of a wide variety of conservation and/or engineering practices. Accompanying resource specialist to observe methods used in meeting resource conservation needs. Gathering and assembling data for use in basic conservation plans. Performing surveys used for design and preliminary layout work, participating in inspection of practices being installed, and making field notes. Attend meetings of soil and water conservation district boards. Work will become increasingly more complex as the student masters skills and assignments and progresses through the program.

Student must be:

Enrolled in at least ½ time basis in an accredited institution of higher education and major field of study must be in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Bio-Systems Engineering or closely related field of study

In good standing with the institution of higher learning presently attending;

 

Available to work at least 2 summers and complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience prior to graduation;

 

Graduate from college no earlier than the Fall of 2014;

 

AND, Interested in long-term permanent employment with the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Texas

 

 

 


For GS-2:  Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and currently be enrolled at an institution of higher learning;

 

For GS-3:  Applicants must have completed 1 academic year of post-high school study (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) and currently be enrolled at an institution of higher learning;

 

For GS-4:  Applicants must have completed 2 academic years of post-high school study (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) and currently be enrolled at an institution of higher learning;

 

Student trainees may be promoted to higher-graded trainee positions based on completion of portions of the education and student trainee work experience.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Public Law 104-134 requires that all federal employees receive salary payments via direct deposit.
  • You must have the ability to use a computer.
  • You may be required to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
