What are the Major Duties of this Position?
Provides specialized medical services to outpatients and provides medical care to inpatients in institutions with an inpatient mission. Specific duties may involve all aspects of health care delivery, and will work in concert with both institution staff and
consultant specialists in various clinical areas. Performs all duties in accordance with current accepted medical practices and procedures.
Performs complete physical examinations. Collects comprehensive medical and social history to include a review of all body systems. Performs physical assessment in correlation with historical findings, records preliminary objective findings.
Examines and orders appropriate diagnostic testing and provides necessary treatment and/or medications as required. Refers selected cases to consultant specialists when necessary. Refers inmates requiring hospitalization to a community hospital and to an appropriate admitting physician. For institutions with inpatient eds, incumbent will make rounds on inmates admitted to his/her care, as described in applicable local procedures. Additionally, the clinician may see inmate patients who are in locked status, in their designated housing area or housed in segregation units.
Conducts examinations of personnel as required for appointment. Approves or disapproves examinations in such cases from a medical viewpoint and in accordance with current established medical standards for employees.
Administers or directs administration of both curative and preventative inoculations. Prescribes medications, treatments, and fully utilizes health services for treatment, rehabilitative, and diagnostic modalities.
As the licensed provider, the incumbent provides clinical oversight and is responsible for all health care delivered. It is the incumbent's responsibility to consult with other health care providers to provide training and mentoring and to be directly involved with the evaluation and treatment of severely ill and medically complex patient care problems. Is responsible for providing direct patient care. Staff physicians responsible for the clinical oversight of provider teams, will provide input to the Clinical Director regarding team member's performance on a quarterly basis.
Renders emergency medical/surgical services as required, and may be called on to treat severe trauma cases.
Ensures that proper evaluations and treatments are carried out and documented. Ensures all court directed evaluations and reports are carried out within the established guidelines of the courts.
Incumbent shall constantly monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care, providing data to the institution Quality Assurance Committee, and other agencies or committees as required.
The incumbent will be required to provide duty coverage as needed. As such, will be required to see patients on an interim basis, who are not in the category of his/her expertise. May be called on to assist in the operation of other clinics, upon the absence of the regularly assigned physician.
Assures proper maintenance of medical records, preparation of reports, etc., as related to the area of responsibility. Makes recommendations on matters of policy, procedures, training, personnel, and equipment as related to specific area of responsibility.
Participates actively in Health Services medical in-service programs. Assists with training for mid-level practitioners, nursing staff, support services personnel, and peer professional staff. As needed, works with and is assigned to various committees.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

How Do I Qualify for this Position?
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following
Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a
school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized
accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. [A
Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical
school that provided education and medical knowledge
substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United
States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the
Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or
a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed
premedical education in the United States and graduate education
in a foreign country).]
All qualified applicants will undergo a credentialing process
prior to employment with the Bureau of Prisons. This process
includes validation of medical examinations, education,

Recognition of Foreign
Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine
or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at
least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in
a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year
of a residency program in an institution accredited for such
training. (This 1 year of supervised experience may be waived for
research or administrative positions not requiring direct patient
care.) For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs
include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs
that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the
United States or Canada. Listings of accredited programs are
published yearly in the Directory of Residency Training Programs
and the Yearbook and Directory of Osteopathic Physicians.
Licensure: For positions involving patient care, candidates must
have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice
medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of
Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Additional Requirements:
Applicants must have five years of residency training in the
specialty of the position to be filled (Internal Medicine) or
equivalent experience and training.
Credit will be given for experience gained in community,
cultural, social service, and professional association on the
same basis as paid work experience. To receive proper credit, you
must show the actual time (such as number of hours worked per
week) spent in the activities.

Special Conditions of Employment Section:
Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
