This position is ideal for fuel distribution system workers looking to perform work on fuel storage tanks and fuel distribution systems and to receive, store, or transfer gasoline, diesel, and propane products.  This position starts at a salary of $22.86 (WG-08) per hour. Apply for this exciting opportunity to become a member of the Air Conditioning and Heating Section, Facility Management Branch, Operations and Maintenance Division in the DHS Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center.

PROMOTION POTENTIAL: Future promotions will be dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and administrative approval.

EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT:  For all nonbargaining unit positions, the following applies:  Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites.  All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.

Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

In this position, you will become a key member of a team of maintenance mechanics in a pivotal policy role from day one. You will perform work on fuel storage tanks and fuel distribution systems. Typical work assignments include:

  • Performing quality assurance and inspection functions.
  • Performing month inspections of all distribution and storage tanks and facilities on above ground fuel storage tanks as well as underground fuel storage tanks. 
  • Operating various types of pumps used to load, unload, and transfer fuel oils, gasolines, through pipes and hoses to and from tank trucks or facilities.
  • Assisting in cleaning interior surfaces of bulk storage tanks, testing seams and areas suspected of leakage, and removing corrosion and repainting surfaces.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.


Working Conditions:  The work may be performed indoors or outdoors under different climatic conditions including hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted areas and is also required to work in crawlspaces, under dripped ceilings, small areas and confined spaces, and must obtain a successful fit test and wear a respirator.  The incumbent may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, drafts, high noise levels, changing temperatures, fumes, and the possibility of injuries such as cuts, scrapes, chemical irritations, bruises, and falls.  The incumbent will be exposed to and work in bad weather, mud, or snow and in wet or icy areas. 

Physical Effort:  Due to the nature of the work, heavy lifting and physical exertion may be required during normal day to day and emergency operations.  As a result, the incumbent will be required to lift up to 40 pounds on a recurring basis and may be required to stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.  Frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching may be required for long periods, including performing physically strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting.  The incumbent may be required to work overtime hours.
