The incumbent attends top level policy and planning conferences as a technical expert regarding regulatory science, leadership, capabilities and programs, and as official spokesperson for the field laboratories.  He/she advises on the potential contribution and resource capabilities of the field laboratories to undertake nationwide or specialized programs and perform work in support of ongoing and proposed regulatory and surveillance programs. Represents ORA on the agency Senior Science Council and the Office of Science.

Provides counsel to FDA regional and district directors, and their staff, as well as Center personnel in all matters relating to ORA field scientific activities. Responds to requests from the regulated industry, other organizations, the general public, and news media giving appropriate information in accordance with FDA and ORA guidelines and policy.

Directs the identification of program goals and objectives for field scientific activities and develops policies and procedures as they relate to these activities to assure delivery of scientific work products that are essential to program objectives.  Serves as the principal spokesperson for field scientific activities of ORA to all constituents.

Basic Qualifications for Supervisory Biologist, GS-401:

  1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience -- Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Qualifications for Supervisory Microbiologist, GS-403: 

  1. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Qualifications for Supervisory Chemist, GS-1320: 

  1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC QUALIFICATIONS ABOVE:

Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal Government.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled that include experience planning, managing and directing program operations which includes surveillance adverse events reports, biostatistics analysis and epidemiology review that support food outbreak investigations.
