This position is a part-time term appointment not to exceed 366 days.  Term appointments may be extended up to 4 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations.


As a Health and Fitness Therapist (Tai Chi), you will be responsible for providing therapeutic holistic treatment in the area of Tai Chi to augment a patient’s individual therapy that is the result of injuries or stress obtained from daily operational or deployment activities. Major duties and responsibilities:


·         Provide accurate instruction in the area of Tai Chi such as various levels of stretching, low impact training and toning.

·         Provide proper instruction in mat work and dry-land work that is appropriate for the various muscles groups of the body.

·         Prepare class format/content appropriate for the type of class and level of participants.

·         Lead participants and clearly demonstrate proper techniques.

·         Independently monitor class participants to ensure proper use of equipment and proper training/exercise techniques.

The Office of Personnel Management has identified the following minimum educational requirements for this position: A degree with a major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.


In addition, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector, OR applicants must possess at least 1 year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s degree OR superior academic achievement. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Providing instruction in the area of Tai Chi such as Mindfulness, Postural Alignment, Breath Awareness, Active Relaxation, Slow  Movement, Weight Separation, and Integrated Movement.


This position has a Selective Placement Factor (screen-out) which will be used to determine minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants not possessing this Selective Placement Factor will be found ineligible for this position. The Selective Placement Factor is: Current certified Registered Tai Chi Instructor from the American Tai Chi and Qigong Association or equivalent- 150 or more documented hours current, continuing, standard training from a recognized Tai Chi organization.

Selectee will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination. 


Work requires constant physical exertion such as long periods of standing, stooping, bending, walking and lifting of minimal weight. Instructor is frequently required to walk, talk or hear and specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision. Tai Chi instruction is primarily done by using the entire body and requires continuous physical movement by the instructor in order to demonstrate proper techniques to the participants. Frequently may be required to move equipment from one location in the area to another.
