Provides support to the Outpatient Pharmacy dispensing operation. Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label and auxiliary labels; and records required data on Pharmacy’s copy of prescription (electronic or written). After final check by a pharmacist, dispenses medication in ambulatory care or discharge situations. Assists with inventory management and ordering of medicines. Operates and maintains complicated/sophisticated pharmacy automation equipment. Enters correct drug, strength, dosage form, and quantity into the patient’s medication profile (VistA, CPRS or otherwise). Participates with a telephone triage team and answers Pharmacy customer service related questions. Supports software and other related electronic based refill and messaging systems for refilling prescriptions. Answers questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution. Assignments include services for Mental health and/or Health Maintenance clinics that provide pharmacy services. Provides patient education on pharmacy topics such as the requesting refill process, drug information sheets, and relaying judgmental questions to the pharmacist.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations: GS-06 Level Pharmacy Technicians: Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must also meet the following criteria for the GS-06 level.
Experience: One year experience demonstrating the Knowledge, Skills, and abilities (KSAs) at the GS-05 level. KSAs at the GS-05 level are:
1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
