The VA Salt Lake City Health Care System (VASLCHCS) is recruiting for an Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development (ACOS/R&D) to join the Medical Center's Chief of Staff and the Executive Leadership team in leading the VASLCHCS to fullfill its mission in serving our veterans. The ACOS/R&D is an academic physician responsible for defining the mission, and overseeing the operation, of the research service. The research service is a diverse group, including clinicians from all sections, PhD researchers, Pharmacists and Nurses, as well as a veterinary medical unit.
The ACOS/R&D must have experience in conducting of research protocols as a Principal Investigator of a VA-funded Research Program involving human subjects, and served on a VA R&D Committee and/or IRB. In addition, it is preferable that the ACOS/R&D served as a clinician in a health care setting. The ACOS should be familiar with VA research policies (e.g., ORD and ORO) as related to human rights in research, safety of personnel engaged in research, research information security, and animal welfare. The assignment requires knowledge of the accreditation requirements of AHRPP.
The ACOS/R&D must have excellent written and oral skills, possess outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills to include but not limited to team building, team oversight and facilitation, program/project management and personnel management. He/she must have keen insight and astuteness when interfacing with community leadership, Chief Executive Officers, Chief Operating Officers and Chiefs of Staff and from other health care staff at organizations and academic personnel such as Department Chairs and Deans from affiliated universities and colleges. The ACOS/R&D must have tact, patience and courtesy when dealing with individuals from all organizations he/she would be communicating with and must be very proficient in the English language.
Some of the main duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. he physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
Basic Requirements:
a. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part.)
b. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
c. Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
d. Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.

Preferred Experience: ACOS R&D must have experience in the conduct of research protocols as Principle Investigator of a VA-Funded Research Program. Additional preferred experience: Served as clinician in a health care setting.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
