This position assists in providing work direction for Youth Conservation Corps Enrollees. The incumbent assists the instructor and leader in conservation work projects for 5-10 enrollees.
This vacancy announcement is for one or more locations throughout Region 3. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.
TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).
Positions will be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

Assists in the duties assigned to the crew of 5-10 enrollees in accomplishing conservation projects.
Assists in instructing enrollees in job related tasks including the safe and efficient use of appropriate tools and equipment. Work projects include conservation and environmental related activities such as tree planting, thinning, trail maintenance, brushing, campground cleanup, and similar maintenance projects.
Provides advice and counsel to enrollees in work related problems and routine personal problems. Resolves complaints and refers disciplinary problems to next level supervisor.
Ensures that crews are properly equipped for conservation work duties. Submits requests for supplies and equipment.
Provides leadership and direction in planning, coordinating, and scheduling daily activities of enrollees. Make lesson plans for programmed work projects. Maintains records and makes required reports.
Is responsible for compliance and enforcement of safe work practices. Actively supports the unit(s) safety and health programs and assures enrollees comply with all safety rules and regulations.You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. GS-04: (6) six months general experience and (6) six months specialized experience equivalent to a GS-03 level.
General Experience is defined as: Performed farm/ranch labor, such as feeding and tending livestock or general maintenance of farm/ranch facilities; Worked in a greenhouse or nursery moving, watering, and tending plants and performing other general labor tasks; Fed and watered animals, such as in a laboratory, pet store, or zoo; Any work experience, paid or unpaid. Unpaid experience, for example, may be regular volunteer work, such as at a park, community sports league facilities, etc
Specialized experience is defined as: Group leader in community or natural resource program (resource conservation or environmental program); counselor in a youth summer camp; instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; group activities leader in the Armed Services; aid or assistant to professional or associate staff engaged in work of a social services nature in private, public welfare, government program, or community organizations, or in voluntary activities; or aid or assistant to professional or specialist staff working with individuals who are addicted to or abuse alcohol and/or drugs.-OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study above high school that (a) included at least 12 semester hours of subjects directly related to the work of the position, or (b) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position. (The supplementary experience may have been gained, for example, in part-time or summer employment, in volunteer social welfare or recreation programs, or in community organizations.) –OR
A combination of education and experience listed above.
