As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service (NPS), and under the guidance of a higher-graded employee, the incumbent serves as a representative of the park and the agency, typically providing basic general information of a recurring nature to visitors at a visitor center, campground, other visitor contact stations, or roving locations throughout the park. In some situations the incumbent may be the only contact the public has with an NPS employee. Responsibilities include providing basic information and responding to routine questions from visitors concerning the park area. The incumbent explains visitor activities and recreational opportunities (including accessible features and services), NPS interpretive services, concession and cooperating association operations and facilities (as applicable), campground and hiking trail availability and location; distributes maps, brochures, and other printed material; informs visitors of potential safety hazards; and provides directions and routes of travel through the park.
Area Information: Located in Northeastern, Ohio Cuyahoga Valley National Park is situated along 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River Valley in a suburban setting between the cities of Akron and Cleveland. The park is predominately natural forest and meadow with some areas of agriculture and excellent outdoor recreation opportunities. Winters are moderately cold with average temperatures in the 20 to 30 degree ranges. Heavy snowfall is not unusual. Summers are moderately warm, average temperatures in the high 70's and 80's with occasional warm spells in the 90's. Rural, suburban, and urban communities are all within a reasonable commuting distance. To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must possess the following experience and/or education requirements at the GS-3 level and/or the GS-4 level by the closing date of the vacancy announcement, Friday, March 31, 2017. Experience may have been gained in the private or public sector and may have been paid or unpaid, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, Americorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. GS-3 Level
Experience: Six months of general experience , which is (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of general experience include, but are not limited to, greeting visitors, disseminating information, providing directions, or other work which required dealing with people on a recurring basis; and that indicates the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of this position.
OR Education: 1 year of education above high school (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) in any field for which high school graduation or equivalent is the prerequisite.
OR A Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of general and specialized experience and education may be considered qualifying if, when compared as a percentage of the experience and education, the total equals or exceeds 100 percent.
GS-4 Level
Experience: 12 months of general experience at the GS-3 level or the equivalent. General experience is experience which equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. This may have included selling merchandise, collecting and accounting for fees or other monies, greeting visitors, disseminating information, providing directions, or other work which required dealing with people on a recurring basis.
OR Education: Successful completion of 2 years of education above high school (60 semester hours).
OR A Combination of Education and Experience A combination of general experience and education may be considered qualifying if, when compared as a percentage of the experience and education, the total equals or exceeds 100 percent. When combining education and experience, only education beyond the first 2 years (i.e. 60 semester hours) is considering qualifying.
