This position participates in both prehistoric and historic archeological field surveys in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Archeological Technicians in this position carry equipment and packs long distances, over rugged terrain, to locate and investigate archeological sites in remote areas of the park. They plan and implement small archeological projects and provide technical assistance in archeological condition assessments. They also serve as a Crew Chief, providing leadership, assigning tasks and monitoring progress to field crews involved in these activities.
Archeological Technicians prepare documents on archeological site investigations and conduct surveys using GPS mapping techniques. They retrieve and compile data to assist in developing, evaluating and preparing draft documents used in report preparation. To be successful in this position they should have basic technical knowledge in archeological site types common to the Rocky Mountain Region and be able to perform work in compliance with applicable Federal Archeological Laws and Guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed both in an office setting and in the field. Survey and documentation work is typically performed in isolated areas; the incumbent must therefore be familiar with outdoor safety and survival skills and must be able to operate a vehicle on rough roads. Sustained periods of camping under primitive conditions are routine.
AREA INFORMATION: Established on January 29, 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park is a living showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. The park embraces 415 square miles of pristine, uninhabited mountains in north-central Colorado and, as such, is the one of the most spectacular, yet easily accessible high mountain areas in North America. With elevations ranging from 7,800 feet at park headquarters to 14,259 feet at the summit of Longs Peak, the park has glacier-sculptured valleys, rugged gorges, alpine lakes, and vast areas of alpine tundra. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved continuous road in the United States, stays above tree line for 11 miles and reaches 12,183 feet in elevation. Elk, deer, bighorn sheep, moose, coyotes, and smaller animals are found throughout the park, as well as threatened and endangered species, such as the Greenback Cutthroat Trout and Boreal Toad. Visitation exceeds 4 million visitors annually. The nearest community on the east side of the park is Estes Park, CO. Limited housing may be available.
Requirements
1.National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
2. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid state issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Monday, April 03, 2017. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.
QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: conduct archeological investigations as an experienced crew member or crew chief. Prepare documents on archeological site investigations. Conduct surveys using GPS mapping techniques and preparing GIS maps and overlays. Conduct pre-historic and historic archeological field investigations and develop draft documents used in report preparation. Conduct archeological work in compliance with Federal Archeological laws and guidelines.
EDUCATION: One full year (18 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education. To be qualifying, graduate study must have been in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field.
COMBINATION EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: An equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, I have six months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 8 semester hours of graduate education in archeology, anthropology, or other closely related field (50% of the education requirement).
