This position serves as a Nursing Assistant in the Geriatrics and Extended Care Line, located at the Batavia VA Medical Center. The employee functions as a member of the nursing team and participates in the care of patients in all acute stages of illness with changing nursing needs that are predictable and require periodic assessment by the Registered Nurse.
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Participates in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care; Assists in the collection of objective and subjective data relative to more complex patient situations; Participates in patient centered conferences and shift reports by contributing information for the development and review of nursing's plan of care; Assists in all aspects of nursing care to meet patient non-routine needs for personal hygiene, physical comfort, activities, exercise, nutrition, safety, rehabilitation, etc; Identifies physical, social, psychological, cultural needs of veterans that may include the need for self esteem, situational changes, decreased sensory-spatial functions, and providing support for a sense of independence while providing assisted self-care; Assists with routing diagnostic measures and preparation for radiological or operative procedures; Assists in orientating patients and their families to unit routines and pertinent policies; Communicates orally and in writing while maintaining positive working relationships with the patient, patient's family members, interdisciplinary team members, and other medical and administrative staff; Records pertinent information in the medical record, and reports patient status to the appropriate medical personnel; Prepares patient care related equipment such as, oxygen, suction, alternating pressure mattress; Assists in monitoring proper functioning and operation of patient care related equipment; Maintains a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment and reporting actual hazards; and Performs supportive functions and other duties as assigned.
Tour of Duty: Various Shifts, SUBJECT TO CHANGE BASED ON AGENCY NEEDS.

GS-4 Level:
Experience and/or education required: One year of specialized experience as a CNA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments or successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, healthcare or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric or operating room technicians. Certain knowledge, skills and abilities are also required.
GS-5 Level:
Experience and/or education required: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 Level which demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate specific knowledge, skills and abilities, or successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor'[s degree. Certain knowledge, skills and abilities are also required.
