Position is duty stationed Saguaro National Park in Tucson, Arizona, a metropolitan area of over 800,000. All urban services are readily available within the area. Daytime temperatures range from 100+ degrees in the summer to 20-70 degrees in the winter. Cooler temperatures at higher elevations. No government housing is available. Numerous housing opportunities exist outside of the park. Field work will be performed in the park's east and west districts; the park's two districts are separated by the city of Tucson.

The core duties of this position are a full range of Park Ranger generalist duties including back-country duties and front country patrol duties in the Rincon Mountain District of Saguaro National Park. The Ranger spends time in the field doing strenuous hiking or horseback riding, performing project work, working with trail crew, contacting visitors, and responding to all types of emergencies including wildland fires.
The Ranger will serve as the Manning Camp Ranger, helping to coordinate and maintain a busy backcountry Ranger Station with a multitude of different work groups coming and going throughout the summer season. Ranger lives in backcountry during the 9 day work period, staying at Manning Camp and other backcountry campsites. Manning Camp is located near the top of the Rincon Mountains at an elevation of 8,000 feet, nearly 10 miles and over 5,000 vertical feet from the nearest road access.
The Ranger will be required to maintain a first responder certification and wildland fire fighting type 2. The Ranger must be able to frequently backpack on overnight trips during inclement conditions, into the wilderness area of Saguaro National Park.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. For the GS-07 grade level
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader, work in a park, recreation or conservation area, environmental education, history and/or cultural resources education, and natural sciences education. Work will include independent research and presentation. -OR- B. You must possess one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation. One year of full time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours. -OR- C. Equivalent combinations of education and experience.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the number of hours worked per week.
Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
