NIH Student Trainees perform duties in one of the Institutes or Centers in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH Student Trainees receive on-the-job- training while pursuing their educational degree. Assignments are aimed at developing the employee's skills and knowledge to progressively perform more difficult duties.
As a NIH Student Trainee (Engineering) you will:

This position is a temporary NIH Internship position with a not to exceed (NTE) date of 9/30/2017; however, the appointment may be extended. Students that are graduating May or June of 2017 that are not enrolled for a new degree-seeking program after graduation will be rated ineligible for this position.
NIH Student Trainees, with U.S. citizenship, may be converted to a career or career-conditional appointment (permanent, or to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of all program requirements specified by the Pathways Participant Agreement.
This announcement can be used to fill a variety of engineering positions such as: Engineer (801), Engineering Technician (802), Architecture (808), Civil Engineer (810), Mechanical Engineer (830), Electrical Engineer (850), Computer Engineer (854), Industrial Engineer Technician (895), Industrial Engineer (896). Non-competitive conversion may be made to either a one-grade or two-grade interval position, depending on the agency's needs. An individual participating in the Internship Program who otherwise meets the Program requirements for conversion (i.e., work hours, satisfactory performance, educational requirements, training completed, etc.) may be converted to a position that has an established career ladder. NIH Student Trainees must work 640 hours prior to graduation in order to be eligible to convert. NIH Student Trainees and their supervisors must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement that outlines expectations for the internship prior to entering on duty. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required throughout the duration of the internship. All NIH Pathways Student Trainees are hired at the Step 1 of the grade in which they are selected.
