The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (http://www.chicago.va.gov/) is a 200-bed inpatient facility, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education, research and academic affiliations with the University of Illinois Chicago and Northwestern University. The main campus resides on 13 acres in the Illinois Medical District, approximately three miles from downtown Chicago. JBVAMC also operates four Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in the Lakeside (downtown) area and Auburn Gresham (south side) community of Chicago, in Chicago Heights, Ill.; and the Adam Benjamin, Jr. VA Outpatient Clinic in Crown Point, IN, which serves the four counties of Northwestern Indiana.

There is a part-time nursing assistant position available for the Emergency Department. The nursing assistant works in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to provide care to a diverse population of unstable patients with complex medical/surgical problems including cardiology, neurology, metabolic, endocrine, vascular, orthopedic, GU and ENT. The nursing assistant is a non-licensed member of the nursing care team who performs specified direct and indirect patient care activities and supportive services under the guidance and direction of licensed staff (Physician, Advanced Practice Nurse, Registered Nurse, and LPN). Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: transporting and escorting patients; 1 on 1 sitter assignments; activities of daily living, hygiene, nutrition, elimination care; therapeutic and diagnostic measures; observation, reporting, and documentation; performs vital signs, height and weights, and a range of treatment procedures and catheterizations; patient teaching and provisions of a safe patient care environment; practices principles of infection control and environmental safety; utilizes required precautions when working with movable equipment, wet floors, and potential exposure to diagnosed/undiagnosed contagious diseases; etc. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining American Heart Association (AHA) Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) per local facility policy.

WORK SCHEDULE:
This is a Part-time position 20 hours per week/ 40 hours biweekly.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
GS-3 (Entry Level):
Education or training: one year of above high school with courses related to the CNA occupation.

GS-4 Grade Level:
Experience: One year of specialized experience as a CNA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;

Education: Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians;
In addition, you must possess the following GS-4 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
1) Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.
2) Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
3) Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
4) Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.
GS-5 Grade Level:
Experience: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs for the grade.
